1st Grade December 2023 Newsletter
Dr. Ronald E. McNair Elementary School
HAPPY DECEMBER!
The month of November flew by! This past month was a busy month for the staff and students as we came to the end of the 1st marking period and started the 2nd marking period.
We hope that you have had the opportunity to meet with your child's teacher and have a good idea of how your child is doing with their school progress. If you have not been able to schedule a conference, please contact your child's teacher as soon as possible! We would like to meet with all parents.
We hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving holiday! We are now ready to work hard in the month of December.
Please remember that we are working on our culture projects this month and to complete the organizer that was sent home recently in addition to sending in pictures for each category.
Sincerely,
Dr. REMES First Grade Team

In writing, we will focus on using adjectives(describing words) in our writing. We will write both narrative and opinion pieces. We will take a piece of writing through the writing process(pre-write, draft, edit and revise and then publish).

AT HOME LEARNING
Some fun things to try at home this month...
- Continue tying shoes. Students are really improving!
- Incorporate addition and subtraction story problems into everyday activities! For example, if making cookies, practice adding to find the total. Or if eating the cookies, practice a subtraction problem to find out how many are left.
- Go on a nature walk and discuss what things have changed - such as what things are different from November or during the summer.
FAMILY TRADITIONS
Mrs. Blackwood
Our family has lots of December traditions! We bake cookies together and make gingerbread houses. On Christmas Eve we go to church with my Grandma and then have a big family dinner. On Christmas Day we open presents and have lots of food. Our family loves this time of year!

I absolutely love the holiday season! My family has a lot of traditions – beginning with celebrating mine and my daughter’s early December birthdays…we spend the first Saturday in December staying in our PJs all day, watching Christmas movies, ordering pizza, and drinking hot chocolate. Throughout the month, we also enjoy decorating the house, baking Christmas cookies, and driving to different neighborhoods to look at all the beautiful lights. I hope whatever you and your family do this December, you make the most wonderful memories!
Mrs. Smith
I absolutely love traditions- they're a big part of my family. Some new traditions we've started as a family are driving to see the Christmas lights in Frederick every year. My son and I enjoy baking gingerbread cookies and making Oreo balls together every year. We also have a special kind of custard pie that has been passed down for 4 generations. We love putting up the lights and decorating to make our home feel festive. I also make a new hand-made ornament for our tree every year- one for each year of my marriage. Someday, I hope to have enough to fill up the whole tree! Wishing everyone a warm and joyful holiday season and happy New Year.
Mrs. Tsarev
My family loves to drive to downtown Frederick and see the holiday decorations along Caroll Creek. We also enjoy making cookies and decorating them with frosting, candies, and sprinkles. We give these cookies to friends and neighbors to spread holiday cheer. Happy Holidays, First grade families!
