Summer Reading 2020

Hello, Hampshire Middle School Families!

Each summer, the English department asks its students to prepare a text and accompanying writing assignment for the start of school. Given our unprecedented situation, we defer to the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and follow the commissioner's guidelines as we move toward opening in September. DESE identifies "content standards that are prerequisite for student success in the next grade level," and teachers will be addressing those standards upon students' return. Accompanying Writing Assignments for ALL Students:

Traditionally, the English department asks students to prepare a written draft/notes of analysis over the summer. There is no expectation that students will complete an essay this summer; however, students should use the active reading strategies (taking notes, making outlines, etc.) they are comfortable with to prepare for whatever assignments teachers give in September in relation to the summer reading assignment. Past writing prompts include character, symbolism, and theme analyses.


In addition, students should record what they believe are relevant quotations and note why the quotation is important. When documenting the quote, it is best to indicate the page number, who is saying the quote, and why it is important to the theme or content of the novel. One content standard expected in ALL grades is the citation and analysis of textual evidence. On average, there may be 8-10 important quotations throughout a novel, but students may find more or less. While students and teachers will engage in this process throughout the year, students should seize upon their time in the summer to practice these skills so as not to lose any progress they've made in their ability to analyze text.


Students' notes will ultimately assist in their participation in discussion, preparation of essays, and comprehension of text, so taking a proactive effort will help students succeed in the fall. Downloadable graphic organizers/note-catchers are attached for families and students to print at home. Are graphic organizers available to use while reading actively?

Students are encouraged to use the attached tools, but these are not required and will not be collected in September. Graphic organizers enable students to organize ideas and record reflections. Students who are unable to print these at home are welcome to handwrite them on their own paper as they are valuable tools for students who benefit from note-taking on separate papers rather than annotating within a novel.


Students who make digital copies will be able to type into expandable boxes, but they are welcome to print on paper and handwrite.

How can our family/student access a book?

There are several options for attaining summer reading books:

1. Families can purchase their own text to enable students to actively read by annotating the pages with highlighters and with marginal notes.


2. Families can visit Hampshire Regional from July 6th through August 7th. Sarah Jablonski, Counseling Administrative Assistant, and Alesia Estabrook, Administrative Assistant in the main office, will be available during summer office hours (8am-2pm) to sign out texts. Texts are limited and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.


3. Families can sign out copies at their town libraries if copies are available.

Here are the content standards teachers will be addressing upon our return:

Incoming grade 7:


1. Cite several pieces of textual evidence to support analysis of what a text states explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text, quoting or paraphrasing as appropriate.

2. Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text; provide an objective summary of a text.

4. Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of specific word choices on meaning, tone, or mood, including the impact of repeated use of particular images.



Incoming grade 8:


1. Cite the textual evidence that most strongly supports analysis of what a text states explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text, quoting or paraphrasing as appropriate.

2. Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text, including its relationship to the characters, setting, and plot; provide an objective summary of a text

4. Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of specific word choices on meaning, tone, or mood, including the impact of allusion and irony.

Students are encouraged to read often. The English department is attaching additional titles we recommend.
