Stricter Enforcement Begins for Kids Ride Free
Please remember that WMATA is beginning stricter enforcement of fare payment and SmarTrip card tapping. For your students, this means that beginning October 15, station managers will no longer be able to tap in students who don’t have their Kids Ride Free SmarTrip card and Metro Transit Police (MTPD) will increasingly be stopping students who enter the system without tapping a Kids Ride Free or other SmarTrip card.
For the near future, MTPD is expected to issue students entering the system, without a valid card, written warnings that ask for their name, date of birth, and school name. WMATA is collecting this for data tracking purposes only and to remind students that they must use their Kids Ride Free SmarTrip card to travel in the Metro system for free. The warning does not carry criminal consequences. We expect MTPD will allow students who are stopped without a valid card to continue their trip but this warning period is only for a limited time.
This means students taking Metrobus or Metrorail to school must have their Kids Ride Free SmarTrip card with them or be prepared to pay the regular fare for their trip. Here are more details on enforcement, issuing replacement cards, and ordering additional cards. For questions please contact school.transit@dc.gov.
