Holland Elementary School Message
December 13, 2019
Hello HES Families,
The highlight of this week at school was the Winter Instrumental and Choral Music Concert. The children worked so hard and delivered wonderful performances in the day and evening concerts.
The evening performance was quite crowded, and I offer an apology to those families who had to stand for the concert. The staff and I want to provide an ideal environment for families to view school performances, and we will make adjustments in the future to make sure that this does not happen again. Despite the seating challenges, I hope that families enjoyed the event and I appreciate the support of our music programs.

STEM Program Update
About this week’s lesson: This week we made representations of planets in the “Planet on a Stick” lesson. Teaching STEM concepts to younger students involves augmenting their understanding, rather than replacing it. This activity offers a platform of information on which students build their understanding,, and a more complete knowledge base is created. This lesson enabled students to use what they have learned so far, and turn their descriptions into reality.
Full Cold Moon – This week you can observe the “Cold Moon.” December’s full moon gets its name from the time of year when temperatures are dropping. Sometimes this this full moon is called “Long Night Moon”. Don’t forget, December 22nd is the winter solstice and the longest night of the year, marking the start of winter in the Northern HemisphereRemember to check for updates and a list of meeting dates on the HES STEM webpage, located under the “About HES” tab.
Registration for Grades 3 through 6 will be posted shortly! Thank you for your patience!
Please contact Mrs. Mangold at amangold@crsd.org with any questions!
Student Council Holiday Raffle Fundraiser
This week, the Holland Elementary School Student Council faciltated a fundraiser to benefit NAMI, an organization that is part of Council Rock’s charitable initiative for the 2019-20 school year. NAMI offers support and education on mental health issues for individuals and families locally and around the country.
The Student Council is excited to share some good news - with the help of Holland Hawks, they raised almost $900 for NAMI! That’s incredible! Want to hear even better news? Student Council is setting the goal of raising $1000, and so they will sell raffle tickets for one more day, tomorrow! Friday the 13th could be your lucky day! So if you’d still like to buy a raffle ticket, they will be on sale during lunches tomorrow! Prizes will be called on Monday! Let’s try and get to $1000!
Holland Mitten Tree
Holland Elementary students and staff are participating in a service project based on the book The Mitten Tree. It is a story about a woman named Sarah who anonymously knitted mittens for the neighborhood children. Sarah would place mittens on a tree and the children would help themselves to a pair.
Kindly help our project by donating new mittens, new gloves, and new hats to keep little hands and heads warm this winter! All donations will be given to children who reside in our own community.
Children can place these items on our “Mitten Tree” that is be located at the front of the school. Donations will be accepted until the holiday break. Thank you for your generosity!

Children can start thinking about what their entry could be! It could be an experiment, a demonstration, a scientific collection, or information on a scientific topic. Students can work individually or in a small group.
Tri-folds and science fair journals can be picked up in the office.
Cold and Flu Season
It is that time of year to start talking with your family about how to protect yourselves from colds and the flu. One reminder is to make sure that students come to school properly dressed. When the weather is appropriate, children will be going outside for recess, and it is highly recommended that students bring a coat, hat, and gloves when the days get colder.
Tips for Keeping Your Family Healthy
- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend getting a flu shot for all family members. This is the best way to prevent getting the flu.
- Talk to your child about good hand-washing and practice washing for at least 20 seconds.
- Teach your child to cough or sneeze into the bend of their arm. If they use a tissue teach them to dispose of them in a trash can.
- Teach your child to avoid touching their eyes, nose and mouth.
- Teach them to avoid sharing drinks, water bottles, and silverware.
- Do not send your child to school with a fever. It is important for them to stay home from school, rest and drink plenty of fluids.
