Counselor's Corner
World Kindness Day, November 13th.
Having an attitude of gratitude can be helpful and optimistic. So can being kind to others. Kindness is the quality of being friendly and considerate. Showing kindness goes a long way. Kindness helps others feel valued. Kindness also has benefits for the person being kind.
These benefits include:
- elevation of dopamine levels in the brain, which makes us feel good
- the feeling of emotional warmth, which leads to a healthier heart
- reduction in inflammation, which can slow the aging process
- reduction of emotional distance, which helps couples feel more bonded
- Contagiousness that often sets off a pay-it-forward ripple effect
With all of these incredible benefits, it pays in more ways than one to be kind. Being kind changes lives. It not only changes your life, but it improves the lives of those on the receiving end of kindness. Some even believe that kindness has the potential to change the whole world.
Roadrunners are recognizing World Kindness Day by participating in Kindness Week: November 15-19. Activities include a kindness challenge where students look for spots of kindness around our school! We will also be reading "Have you filled a bucket today?" and "A Spot of Kindness."
Here are some ways your family can participate in kindness week:
- Hand out notes of encouragement wherever you go, including the grocery store, coffee shop, etc.
- Offer to do an errand for someone like walking their dog or helping them with groceries
- Cook dinner for a friend and bring it to their home
- Give notes of appreciation to family members, coworkers, and service providers
- Pay for someone’s meal at a restaurant
- Pay for the coffee or meal of the person behind you at the drive-thru
- Give someone, or several people, a hug
- Encourage others to be kind
Come up with your own creative kindness ideas on social media and share using #WorldKindnessWeek when sharing on social media.

Math Play Every Day
Engage your student in reasoning with this fun activity from Math Anywhere! This place-based printable will help get the math conversation started with your student.
This month, students are asked to compare two household objects, and consider “How are these objects the same and different?”
Engage using Flipgrid
Follow the prompts as you observe the objects:
What makes them the same?
What makes them different?

The Wall
By Eve Bunting
A young boy and his dad have traveled all the way to Washington, DC to see the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. They have come to find the name of the boy's grandfather, his dad's father. The little boy calls the memorial "my grandfather's wall." As the father and son look for the grandfather's name, they meet others who are visiting the memorial, including a veteran in a wheelchair and a couple weeping while hugging one another.
They see flowers, letters, flags, and a teddy bear that have been left at the wall. When they find the name, they do a rubbing and leave a school photograph of the boy on the ground below his grandfather's name. When the boy says, "It's sad here," his father explains, "It's a place of honor."
Social Emotional Activities
Have your family get in a circle and share an appreciation, apology, or realization with other members of the family.
For example,
I would like to appreciate my sister for helping me with my project as well as helping to cook dinner 3 times this week.
I apologize to everyone for leaving the family room in a mess. In the future, I will make sure that I clean up my mess so that others can enjoy the room too.
Reminders!
