Hudson High School Celebrates 19 National Merit Scholars
The Hudson City School District is proud to announce the 19 students who have been recognized as National Merit Semifinalists and Commended Scholars in the 67th National Merit Scholarship Program.
Thomas Banko, Quinn Berichon, William Carvalho, Mary Earp, Adam House, Andrew Hu, Elizabeth Unger and Megan Zhao have earned the prestigious title of National Merit Semifinalists. These academically talented Explorers earned scores on the PSAT, taken in their junior year, that were among the highest in Ohio. Now, they will continue in the competition to become National Merit Finalists, and join approximately 16,000 students nationwide to compete for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $30 million. Scholarships will be awarded in spring of 2022.
Additionally, 11 students were acknowledged as Commended Scholars in the National Merit Program. Congratulations to Elliot Aszkler, David DeLambo, Morgan Hudy, Constance Loring, Jack Lualdi, Sera Mathew, Tyler McClelland, Avery Taylor, Hailey Walker, Darby Wilson and Erin Zmich.
In celebration, all 19 students will be recognized at an upcoming Board of Education meeting, and will be honored at Senior Awards Night and during Commencement. They also will be treated to lunch at FlipSide in downtown Hudson.
McDowell Early Learning and East Woods Intermediate Welcome Community
At McDowell, renovations included the addition of central air, new paint, new flooring and ceilings, LED lighting and restroom upgrades. Lockers were replaced with cubbies.
At East Woods, an addition created 14 more classrooms and extra kitchen space. The expansion also included an elevator to make the building more accessible for students and parents. We thank everyone who came out to see the culmination of the buildings' redesigns.

Hands of Gratitude at HMS Helps Others Worldwide
Students are currently working on building hands for six recipients globally, including a three-year-old boy in California and man that lives in a remote village in Bangledore. Students are able to customize the hand to fit the age and size of the recipient, and often build an extra, larger hand for those younger to grow into. Once outfitted, the prosthetic hands are able to be used immediately.
The class is headed by Service Learning Literacy Teacher Beth Hohenfeld and Hands of Gratitude Founder Matt Campana.

Penny Wars Raises Funds for East Woods
Penny Wars, the wildly popular competitive fundraiser, was back at East Woods Intermediate this year- bigger than ever!
This year, the fundraiser turned East Woods into the world of Harry Potter. Principal Natalie Wininger used the Sorting Hat to place grade specific class teams into the four Houses; Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin.
Once sorted, students were encouraged to bring pennies, dollars or checks to earn their House points. In a twist, students were able to target their nemesis House by donating their silver coins (nickels, dimes and quarters) to them, reducing their collection totals and adding to the strategic fun.
Dedicated members of the PTO sorted and counted change for more than six hours on the final collection day. The final tally – a record-setting $16,500 that will go back into the school!
Mrs. Binns’ 3rd grade Hufflepuff House was declared the school winner, and will get a special frozen treat.
Walkathon at McDowell Raises Funds for PTO
Super Leaders at McDowell Early Learning pounded the pavement in the annual Walkathon on Thursday!
The beautiful fall sunshine was no match for the bright smiles of preschool and kindergarten students as they navigated through several movement stations. Special guests included Mr. Incredible, Batwoman and Spiderman, much to the delight of students.
After completing the course, which incorporated the new playground, the children showed off their moves in a bubble dance party! Donations raised from the Walkathon will fund PTO sponsored events at McDowell, including Snuggle Up and Read, Movie Night and Staff Appreciation Week.
Charlotte's Web Day at Ellsworth Hill
Second grade students at Ellsworth Hill kept tradition alive as they celebrated Charlotte’s Web Day. The school transformed into Zuckerman's Farm as students donned creative homemade costumes of Charlotte, Wilbur, Fern, Avery and even Templeton the rat!
The classic story is read by each second grade class. Upon completion and thoughtful discussions, students are treated to the special day. Students enjoyed square dancing, crafting, and even channeled their inner Wilbur by eating friendship slops! The fun-filled day wrapped up with students watching the movie.
