Media Notes
As part of our kickoff for Battle of the Books, we are also having a bookmark contest. This contest will encourage our creative artists to design a bookmark on an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper. This should be an original drawing using pencils, markers, paint, etc. The theme for this contest will center around the book Wonder by R.J. Palaco. This book is on our Battle list for this year, and the movie based on this book is being released on November 17th. Wonder is a terrific book about how to treat others with kindness. Please encourage your student to participate in this contest. The winner receives a Barnes and Noble gift card and will be invited to our pizza party at the end of our Battle of the Books competition. We will also make their design into bookmarks available for students to pick up in the library media center. All artwork is due to the library media center by Friday, November 3.

October is National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month
Every October, schools and organizations across the nation join STOMP Out Bullying in observing National Bullying Prevention Month. The goal is to encourage communities to work together to stop bullying and cyberbullying by increasing awareness of the prevalence and impact of bullying on all children of all ages. The explosion of social media apps has made it particularly easy for kids (and adults) to be cruel, especially when they feel they can attack others anonymously. Bullying can leave emotional scars well into adulthood, and adults who were bullied are more likely to have trouble keeping a job, maintaining relationships, and can be more prone to addiction.
Madras Middle School continually strives to create a culture of caring in our school community. Our core values, Eagles RISE include the values we work to live by daily (respect, integrity, safety, and empathy), and we have worked to communicate these expectations by:
- holding individual administrative team talks each nine weeks to communicate expectations
- equipping students with the knowledge needed to identify, to respond, and to report both unkind behavior or bullying behavior
- teaching and promoting how to deal with conflicts, how to be a good friend, how to show kindness/empathy, and how to care for others through weekly advisement lessons, student service organizations, and daily announcements
- recognizing students who exemplify our core values through daily Eagle Applause recipients, Eagle Pride honorees, Students of the Week, positive office referrals, and additional team/class recognition
In addition to the our ongoing focus on bullying prevention, our school will observe Bullying Prevention Month with activities planned by our counseling team.
Madras Middle School
ANTI-BULLYING MONTH ACTIVITIES
Students will announce facts about bullying each day over the intercom.
Eagle Ambassadors will create posters and banners to hang up around the school.
Wednesday, October 11th will be BLUE OUT day. Students and staff will wear blue to represent anti-bullying month official colors.
Friday, October 13th & Friday October 20th students will be encouraged to sit with students they don’t usually talk to during lunch. “No one eats alone day” Use #WeAreHereForYou on your social media.
Students will create a banner for kindness statements. Students will write kindness or empathy statements for one another during homeroom. The statements will be placed on the banners in each hallway and displayed during the week of October 10th and October 16th.
During National Bullying Prevention Month, parents are urged to talk to their children about the harm bullying can cause and ways they can protect themselves and others. It is critical that suspected bullying is reported right away to a counselor, administrator, or resource officer so that the incident can be investigated and preventive measures can be put in place. You can read more at https://www.stopbullying.gov/.
Car Rider Change Effective Thursday, October 26th
Dear Madras Families,
Over the past month we have been working collaboratively with our superintendent, our transportation department, and additional district office personnel to develop a plan for improving the traffic backup that occurs during daily arrival to and dismissal from school.
To help lessen the congestion on Edgeworth, the new car rider drop-off and pick-up location will be behind the school effective Thursday, October 26th.
Car rider drop-off and pick-up will be behind the school where students are picked up from athletic events (at the football field).
Parents should turn onto Frank Cook Road (first left past the school if coming down Edgeworth from highway 29).
Take the first left off Frank Cook from Edgeworth, and pass the bus loading loop and parking lot, continuing straight ahead and staying to the far right where the track loops around at the football field.
Cars will stop at the sidewalk by the football field until students are dismissed.
Once students have been dismissed to the car loading zone, staff will direct traffic (two car lanes) farther down the track which will help expedite the process.
The loop in front of the school will be reserved for students who check-in or check-out during the school day and for visitors’ parking.
We realize there will be a transition period while families learn the new routine, and we may have to make additional adjustments, but it is our hope that the new car rider location will give cars more space off the road to line up when dropping off and picking up students.
Our school appreciates your input and support. If you have questions we can help answer, please contact a Madras administrator at 770-254-2744.
Duke University Talent Identification Program
What is the Duke Talent Identification Program Search?
The largest program of its kind, participants in the Duke TIP 7th Grade Talent Search identify academic strengths, develop abilities and interests, and celebrate their achievements at a crucial time when they are forming their identities and looking ahead to the future. TIP assists families in determining how advanced their students’ academic abilities are and what level of educational challenge is appropriate.
As part of the talent search enrollment, Duke TIP registers eligible seventh graders to take either the ACT (no Writing) or SAT (no Essay) as an above-level test. This allows students to have greater insight into their abilities and it gives them the opportunity to preview a college entrance exam.
Parents are invited to take a moment to learn about this talent search, its valuable benefits and resources designed specifically for academically talented youth, and its qualifications for enrollment.
Do I Qualify?
- You must be in the seventh grade (or a current eighth grader who skipped seventh grade).

Amy Brandon, PTSO President
Welcome to Madras! The purpose of our PTSO is to help improve our school by combining the efforts of parents, students, and teachers. We invite you to join PTSO to help make our school a better place to work and learn! Our fundraising efforts have benefited a variety of projects in the past including school building improvements, teacher instructional requests, equipment for the fine arts department, instructional technology purchases, and athletic programs. This year, our goal is to raise enough funds to purchase an electronic sign in front of the school to replace the old signage. We hope to reach this goal by the end of the school year. We ask that each family join PTSO with a $12.00 contribution. (Checks should be made payable to Madras PTSO.)
We also need your volunteer time! If you are interested in assisting with any of the areas below, please print the form below linked beneath, and indicate in the appropriate section. Return the form to the MMS front office or to your child's homeroom teacher. You will be contacted as the events take place.

Box Tops Update
By Gina Johnson, PTSO Box Top Coordinator
September BoxTops Update
The students and faculty did a great job clipping and turning in BoxTops for the month of September! So far, $609 worth of BoxTops has been clipped and will go towards the Madras school fund!
Keep those BoxTops coming in! The month of October homerooms will continue to collect BoxTops. The homeroom with the most turned in by the end of school on Friday, October 27th will be the winner of a Chick-Fil-A breakfast.
Reminder:
Only BoxTops that have not expired will count.
BoxTops can simply be placed in a baggie, but the baggie should be labeled with the student’s name and homeroom to get credit.
Thank you for thinking of Madras by remembering to clip those BoxTops! Download the BoxTops app or visit the BoxTops website http://www.boxtops4education.com/ for contests and more ways to earn for our school!
