message from eics re: k-4 curriculum implementation

We are in the process of implementing a new curriculum in three courses: Physical Education and Wellness at all grades, and English Language Arts and Literature as well as Mathematics in grades 1-4.

Along with many of the same knowledge and skill outcomes as in our former curriculum, these courses come with new content and skills that require additional background work to ensure students have the exposure and practice to successfully interact with their new grade level expectations. On the upcoming report cards, students will receive a level of achievement based on the new curriculum outcomes.

In addition, some grade 1-4 teachers have chosen to pilot portions of, or the full draft of, the Science curriculum. As they pilot, teachers are invited to provide feedback to Alberta Education about the strengths and areas for improvement of the draft program. This commitment will support Alberta Education by having real classroom experiences to assist them in refining the courses before they are required to be implemented. This school year, students who are in classrooms where programs are being piloted will receive a level of achievement for the course and comments will reflect the student’s achievement with the draft knowledge and skill components.

Parents can support their children with the expectations of any of the new curriculum in similar ways to their support in the past. Read with children and ask questions about what they noticed in the text, what they wonder about, and what they might want to explore further. Take opportunities to ask math questions when cooking or shopping, or when you are out walking. After walking or engaging in a physical activity, ask questions about how the activity impacts their physical and mental feelings. These all bring awareness to the connection between curriculum and our lives outside of school which will enhance students’ abilities to engage with their school work.
