West Point El. Parent Update
Week of August 21, 2023
Dear West Point Families,
Thank you for a wonderful first two days of school! We are so happy to have our students back with us and are excited to get the year rolling.
Here are three important things to know for the week.
- First Day of Kindergarten. The first day of school for our kindergarten students is Wednesday, August 23. Kindergarten students only will follow the EARLY OUT schedule on Wednesday and Thursday, as well as Friday with the rest of the school. Please see below for additional information about kindergarten this week.
- Community Council Applications Due Friday, August 25. We have two openings on our Community Council this year. Applications (below) are due in the school office by this Friday, August 25. We hope you will consider serving on this committee with us.
- Please sign Electronic Documents on myDSD. There are a number of electronic documents that need signing at the beginning of each year. These documents can be found in your myDSD account. The district has just added the Safe Schools Policy 2023-2024. More information is below. Please be sure to sign this document this week.
We look forward to seeing you very soon!
Sincerely,
Marjorie Conrad and Michelle Yoho
Principal and Assistant Principal, West Point Elementary
Important Information
Safe Schools Presentations - Parent Electronic Signatures Needed
Each year we meet with our students to teach Davis School District's Safe Schools rules. These rules and expectations come from the following district policies.
- DSD Policy 5S-100 “Student Conduct and Discipline”
- DSD Policy 11IR-100 “Nondiscrimination Policy and Complaint Procedures.”
- Safety Drills
- Safe Schools for Everyone
- Kindness and Respect
- Inclusion and Belonging
- Reporting and Supports
We will be meeting with 1st-6th grade classes this week to share these presentations. We need all parents to log into myDSD and do the following.
1st-6th Grade Parents:
- Review the information on the electronic document and sign the Safe Schools Policy 2023-2024 electronic form.
Kindergarten Parents:
- We are asking Kindergarten parents to personally review the PowerPoint and Safe Schools information with your child. The presentation is attached to your electronic signature form and is also included below. Please sign the Safe Schools Policy 2023-2024 electronic form when you have reviewed this information with your student. (We will meet with kindergarten students to review our school rules and positive behavior rewards.)
Every student will receive a PAW-SITIVE BEHAVIOR BRAG TAG when they have been trained.
Drop Off and Pick Up Procedures
- Blocking crosswalk: Whether parking or waiting in your car, please make sure you are not blocking any of our crosswalks.
- Using crosswalks: We need your help in making sure all students use the crosswalks when crossing the street. Please do not call students to run across the street to where you are parked. Students have tried to run across 300 North, which is a huge safety concern. Students need to cross at the crosswalks with our crossing guards.
Community Council Applications Due this Friday
We have two openings for this year's Community Council, and we would like to encourage you to apply.
The Community Council is made up of teachers, parents, and administration who meet five times during the year. Serving on the council is a great way to partner with the school as we consider how to best meet the needs of our students. The Community Council also oversees the expenditure of our Trustland funds.
The attached letter gives additional information about the duties of the council. A copy of the application is linked below. You can also pick up an application from the school office. Applications are due in the school office by Friday, August 25. If needed, we will hold elections Monday, August 28 - Thursday, August 31. Our first meeting will be Wednesday, September 13 at 5:30 in our WPE conference room.
Kindergarten First Days of School
Thank you for bringing your kindergarten students for KEEP testing. We will be finishing testing on Monday morning. Kindergarten teacher assignments will be posted the evening of Monday, August 21.
We will hold a Kindergarten Open House on Tuesday, August 22 from 2:30-3:30 so students can meet their new teachers, see their classrooms, find out where they line up, etc.
The regular kindergarten schedule begins Wednesday, August 23. KINDERGARTEN ONLY will follow the early out schedule on that Wednesday and Thursday, as well as Friday, which is an early out day for everyone. Buses will bring your FDK kindergarten students home on the early out days.
