Feminist Theory

Feminist Theory: what it is, why i chose it, and why it matters to me.

Feminism is an approach to issues of equality between genders and sexuality. Feminism is not the belief that one gender should be raised in power above another. The reason I chose this topic is because I am a girl and a lot of these issues will affect me when I get a job, go into the real world and maybe even when I get married one day. I as a woman want to feel and be equal to men. I don't think that it is fair that men get paid more or even get treated differently. I think a lot of times men get treated with more respect because people feel as if men can do more than women and that is so not true. Some people refer to woman that believe in these things "feminist" but I am sorry that I want to be treated with equal respect as my male co-worker when I do more than him or that I want my daughter one day to be treated equally when she is a kid, teen, and even an adult.
Selena Gomez & The Scene - Who Says

Selena Gomez & The Scene "Who Says" (2011)

The reason i chose this song is because it talks about how people try to discourage you. Selena Gomez is asking the person listening to the song who says your not pretty or you not good enough. I think this is the perfect song for this because a lot of times guys try and make girls think they aren't good enough for anyone or their body is good enough or they are pretty. Also guys and even some other girls make women feel like that cant be certain things such as president or go into the armed forces because they are too "feminine".

Fact: Feminism is defined as the belief in the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes.

Colbie Caillat - Try

Colbie Caillat "Try" (2014)

The reason i chose this song for my project is because Colbie Caillat in this song talks about how girls try so hard to do things like exercise, do their hair and nails, and buy new stylish clothes so that other people will like them more. She explains how you don't have to change a thing and how you don't have to try to make others like you as long as you like yourself and that is all that matters. I feel as if a lot of girls don't get this and even though they do like themselves they still try harder to make others like them.

Fact: Only 17% of the seats in Congress are held by women.

Martina McBride - This One's For The Girls

Martina McBride "This One's For The Girls" (2003)

The reason i chose this song for my project is because Martina talks about girls of all different ages and things they may struggle with like she said "This Is for all you girls about thirteen, high school can be so rough can be so mean, hold on to on to your innocence, stand your ground when everybody's given in." To me she is telling girls in high school that no matter what you should always stand your ground when everyone is giving in to making fun of people or just being mean and doing things they shouldn't. Then she goes on and says" This is for all you girls about twenty five, In little apartments just trying to get by, living on on dreams and spaghetti-o's, wondering where your life is gonna go." and to me she is saying that no matter what anyone says its ok to be living that way. Not everyone is perfect.

9 to 5 - Dolly Parton with lyrics

Dolly Parton "9 to 5" (1980)

In this song Dolly explains how a woman working a nine to five shift that is just barley getting by never gets a promotion or a raise because a rich business man doesn't really care about you. You do everything but you never get credit for it. I feel like jobs are still like this today because if your a "female" they think you doesn't deserve the same pay as men even if you do better work than them.

Fact: Globally, about 1 in 3 women will be beaten or raped in her lifetime.

Christina Aguilera - Beautiful (Official Video)

Christina Aguilera "Beautiful" (2002)

I chose this song because Christina Aguilera explains that you as a woman are beautiful in every single way. You shouldn't let words get you down no matter what they say about you and your appearance.

Fact: Over 130 million women in the world have undergone female genital mutilation. This is when girls have either part or all of the clitoris and inner and outer labia cut off, without anesthesia. Often, they have a part of their vagina sewn up as well.

Grace - You Don't Own Me ft. G-Eazy

Grace ft. G-Eazy "You Dont Own Me" (2016)

Grace in this song explains how guys sometimes act like they own you or you are their property. Boyfriends and ex-boyfriends do this to girls. They make sure they know everything your doing and you cant do anything or go anywhere without you asking them or them knowing about it. She lets you know that you have to get away from that and you cant let them tie you down. You don't deserve that. I feel ad if a lot of girls think its "normal" or hes being "protective" when guys act like this but its not ok.

Fact: In 1950, women comprised less than 2% of the U.S. military. Currently, about 14% of active members in the U.S armed forces are women.

Shakira - Underneath Your Clothes

Shakira "Underneath Your Clothes" (2001)

I chose this song because Shakira says that your a song written by the hands of God. You are so much more than what people see. Underneath your clothes is just like saying "on the inside" is what matter the most. All the time people are quick to judge at what they first see and they don't even take the time to get to know you.

Fact: Women hold the two highest IQ scores ever recorded.

Demi Lovato - Skyscraper

Demi Lovato "Skyscraper" (2011)

I chose this song for my project because the song describes someone that was in a long relationship where they gave everything and sacrificed things for that person. You try so hard to get their memory to go away and they are amazed at how much effort you have put into making them go away. I think this happens some times because the boy never really loved the girl and didn't want to really be with her so he is happy that she is trying so hard to get him and his memory to go away.

Fact: Single women with children make 60% of what men make.
