Assuring Learning Excellence and Readiness for a Changing World
Happy Teacher Appreciation Week!
We have an incredible school, Home of the Scarlets. I feel privileged to come to this building every day and serve this school community. We have incredible teachers, a caring staff, amazing students and supportive families. We have a tradition of excellence. There is a deep sense of pride in being a Scarlet, one that is evidenced by the number of alumni that return each year for Homecoming. Scarlets achieve, because of high expectations and the support provided by the adults in the building. Whether that be in academics, the arts, or athletics; we are consistently recognized for those achievements. US News and World Report has once again chosen Mankato West High School as one of the best high schools in Minnesota. At the heart of all this pride is you, the teachers. You are the ones who welcome over 150 students each semester into your classroom, and take them from where they are to where they need to be in their learning. You do this by developing strong relationships, knowing their strengths, what works best for them, and interacting with them daily. You believe in them, and you don’t give up. Seven weeks ago, we heard words we had never heard before...distance learning. You had 8 days to change teaching and learning. 8 days. I was overwhelmed by your positivity, your can-do attitude, and your focus on what would be best for your students. April 23 we found out that we would continue distance learning through the end of the year. I never thought that March 13th would be the last day we would all be together. There are a lot of emotions we are going through, some call this ambiguous grief, but your unwavering support for our students has been a constant, and for that, I thank you. I wish we could all be together to celebrate you this week, and I can’t wait for the day when we can all be together in the Home of the Scarlets. You are essential, you are teachers, and I am so grateful that you are Scarlet Teachers.
