Garnet Valley CTC Quick Tip #28 2017-2018
Did you know? On March 22nd at 6:30 pm, parent/caregivers had the opportunity of hearing Barbara Sisom RN and Tobacco Prevention Specialist and I address concerns about Juuling and Vaping. Barbara brought a medical professional’s perspective to the topic. The parents and school staff who attended learned a great deal about a problem that has taken so many schools and colleges by storm. Vapes and Juuls are tobacco products and more will be learned about the harm they do as the FDA is finally permitted to evaluate them for safety this summer. Unfortunately, due to the powerful effect of high levels of nicotine found in most Juul pods and vape juices, 30.7% of vape/juulers will go on to smoke cigarettes in 6 months (www.drugabuse.gov). Those students who believe they are only vaping/juuling flavors are at risk for “Popcorn Lung” due to diacetyl that is present as the basis for flavors regardless of the nicotine content. “E-cigarettes”, the correct classification for all vape/juul products, are the only known causative agent for this devastating disease that kills healthy lung tissue.
Call to action… If you missed last night check on the websites below and encourage your student to do the same.
● JUUL Vapor Website – Frequently Asked Questions https://support.juulvapor.com/home/learn/faqs
● Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids https://www.tobaccofreekids.org/
● Truth Initiative https://truthinitiative.org/?o=4903
● FDA – Regulation, Research, Studies and Reporting www.fda.gov
● Tobacco Resistance Unit http://truinpa.org/
Barb is available to work with students who find themselves addicted to nicotine and unable to stop using juuls or vapes.
