Preventing Falls in the Home

The most common hazard for falls in the home is tripping over things on the floor, such as toys, loose rugs, and pets. Other causes for falls are slippery floors, poor lighting, uneven surfaces, and no handrails.

Basic first aid for fall injuries include:

  • washing cuts and scrapes with water
  • applying pressure to stop bleeding, then wrapping a bandage around it
  • calling 911 if bleeding is profuse or there are broken bones or head injury
  • wrapping sprains with a bandage and applying ice
