What is community supported agriculture?

Community supported agriculture, or CSA, is a system in which growers and consumers share the risks and benefits of high-quality food production. Essentially, a consumer group will fund an entire season of crops and share the yield equally on oftentimes a weekly basis. Through this, many local farms benefit; consumers also benefit by getting, most of the time, organic foods that are locally grown. Additionally, as its name suggests, community supported agriculture fosters a community that is aware of its surroundings and appreciative of nature.

The Start of Community Supported Agriculture

With a heightened awareness of environmental problems, many Americans have sought community supported agriculture to reduce such problems. Because farms are sufficiently funded through CSA, farmers do not have to resort to chemicals or fertilizers that could negatively impact the environment; instead, farmers can grow produce through more organic means.

In addition to increased awareness of rising environmental problems, people support community supported agriculture because they like to know where and how their food is being grown. For example, with current GMO-phobia, many people look to exclusively buy foods that are "naturally" grown, causing people to seek CSA's. The more intimate relationship that growers and consumers share in CSA systems further ensures the freshest and most organic foods to consumers,
