Crime Occurs

Arrest

Person is arrested after crime and taken before a judge.

Initial Appearance

If criminal pays bail they are free but go to trial later.

Trial Information

If defendant can not pay bail or the crime is too severe they get their trial info.

Arraignment and Plea

Defendant pleas guilty or not guilty to crime.

If defendent pleads guilty defendant is sentenced.

Discovery and Plea Negotiations

If defendant pleads not guilty defense attorney looks at States evidence.

Usually the defendant pleads guilty here and is then sentenced.

Trial

Defendant still pleads not guilty trial is set up.

If defendant is found not guilty then he or she is free.

Sentencing

If defendant is found guilty they pay a fine, get probation, or have jail time.

Appeal

If convicted criminal gets jail time then he or she can appeal and get a new trial
