Weekly Update
November 7-11, 2022
Message from the Principal
The week of November 14 is American Education Week- Here is a little bit about the week
AMERICAN EDUCATION WEEK HISTORY
The National Education Association was one of the creators and original sponsors of American Education Week.
Distressed that 25 percent of the country's World War I draftees were illiterate and 9 percent were physically unfit, representatives of the NEA and the American Legion met in 1919 to seek ways to generate public support for education.
The conventions of both organizations subsequently adopted resolutions of support for a national effort to raise public awareness of the importance of education. In 1921, the NEA Representative Assembly in Des Moines, Iowa, called for designation of one week each year to spotlight education. In its resolution, the NEA called for: “An educational week ... observed in all communities annually for the purpose of informing the public of the accomplishments and needs of the public schools and to secure the cooperation and support of the public in meeting those needs.”
The first observance of American Education Week occurred December 4-10, 1921, with the NEA and American Legion as the cosponsors. A year later, the then U.S. Office of Education joined the effort as a cosponsor, and the PTA followed in 1938.
Other co-sponsors are the U.S. Department of Education and national organizations including the National PTA, the American Legion, the American Legion Auxiliary, the American Association of School Administrators, the National School Boards Association, the American Federation of Teachers, the American School Counselor Association, the Council of Chief State School Officers, the National School Public Relations Association, the National Association of State Boards of Education, the National Association of Elementary School Principals, and the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
American Education Week is always celebrated the week prior to the week of Thanksgiving.

Connecting with the Counselor
After a few weeks of wonky 5th Grade Counselor Lesson schedule, we were back to reviewing our Zones of Regulation. We are still working on identifying what feelings and situations belong in what zone/color. It is important that we can easily recognize what zone we are in before we work on building our toolbox of strategies to get us back in that green zone. One thing we focused on this week was that no zone is bad -- not even the Red Zone. For example, if your team loses a really important game, it's totally fine to feel mad or angry (Red Zone). But what is NOT okay is to hit someone or blame a teammate. One phrase that we use a LOT during this unit is, "Feel your feelings, but choose your actions."
Ask your student...
1. What is a situation that you might be in for each of the four zones? Below is the Zones of Regulation Chart that we use in our lessons.
2. Play THIS SONG with your student. Warning! -- They will probably sing along and it will be in your head the rest of the day, too. ;)
6th, 7th, 8th Grade
Each week, students check their grades during their Morning Community. These grades are reviewed with their Morning Community / Advisory Teacher. If a student has two or more Fs in their Core Classes (Math, LA, Science, SS, Health), then they are required to go to Power Hour during their Tiger Time.
Do you know how to log into Skyward to check your student's grades? Did you know that there is a way that Skyward can automatically send you a copy of your student's grade each week? If you need help setting up your account, or you need help getting your student's grades sent to you, please let Mrs. Schrader know and she will be happy to help!
