Friday, February 24th:

Dear Cardinal Family,

The birds tell me everything I need to know.

In the winter, mornings are quiet and cold. While we're technically still there, it's clear nature is getting restless. When I wake up now, I hear the birds chirping, seemingly begging for the temperature to rise as quickly as the sun.

Well, as a school principal, I can tell you birds are chirping here, too. I think we're all ready for spring! I also know this is the normal ebb and flow of seasonal changes and how they typically impact behavior. The glimpses of sun and warmth are exciting. The crash of temperatures reminds us we're not quite there yet, no matter how impatient we are.

The best path forward is us working together to keep everyone on track. I always love how parent-teacher conferences offer an opportunity for a course correction. They also remind us we've still got work to do and a good bit ahead of us.

I'm hoping the holiday weekend gives us all a chance to recharge, enjoy each other, and come back ready to finish out February!

Have a great weekend and Go Cards!

Sincerely,

Pete Scully

Principal

Thomas Worthington HS

What Teachers and Staff are Saying

See what the teachers and staff are saying about the TWHS January Cardinals of the Month.

The 3Rs - Cardinal Expectations at TWHS

There are three general behavior expectations at Thomas Worthington High School: build Relationships, show Respect, and be Responsible.

We define build Relationships as “to cultivate belonging”. It is our goal that 100% of our students feel connected to at least one adult that they trust enough to go to when they really need it. From our morning greeting as each student enters the building, to each teacher connecting with each student, to our Wednesday homeroom lessons, we strive to create an environment that is so welcoming - all are inspired to learn.

We define show Respect as “use appropriate language”. We work towards being mindful of the words we speak and the immense power they have on ourselves and others. We learn that the words we say, along with the time, setting, and location have an impact on others.

We define be Responsible as “to attend and be on time to class”. We are intentional about the value of showing up, being on time, and being present for ourselves and others.

ACT Testing for ALL Juniors March 14th

On Tuesday, March 14th, Worthington high schools will administer the state-funded ACT to all 11th grade students during the school day. This ACT administration is free to all 11th grade students. All juniors will automatically be enrolled to take the test. Linworth, Academy, and half-day DACC students will take the test at their home school.

In order to provide focused time and attention to the ACT, the morning will be dedicated to testing only. All 11th grade students are required to report to school at their regular time for testing. We will use a delayed start of school for 9th, 10th, and 12th grade students. Lunch will be available for all students. Classes will begin at 12:55 p.m.

Transportation

  • For 11th grade students, school buses will run at their regularly scheduled times for arrival.

  • For 9th, 10th, and 12th grade students, school buses will run on approximately a 90 minute delay for arrival.

    • Students on buses will arrive at school around 10:10 a.m. They will be directed to the gym for recreation or the auditorium.

  • All buses will run on a regular schedule for dismissal.

  • PM Academy, Linworth, and DACC students will leave for their schools immediately after testing. A bus will pick them up at the West End. (For students with extended time, they will be transported to their school of enrollment upon completion of the test.)

Thomas Worthington High School Presents: Seussical the Musical

The Cat in the Hat tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust that contains the Whos, including Jojo, a Who child sent off to military school for thinking too many "thinks." Horton faces a double challenge: not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant.

When to Keep Your Child at Home / Guidelines From our Health Office

When to Keep Your Child Home: Your child is too ill to go to school if he or she has any of the following symptoms:

  • Temperature above 100 degrees F by mouth (see below)
  • Vomiting or diarrhea within the past 24 hours (see below)
  • Shortness of breath or has increase in wheezing during normal activity
  • Has a cough that interrupts normal activity
  • Pain from an earache, headache, sore throat or recent injury.
  • Has yellow or green drainage from nose or eye(s)
  • Rash over body or localized to one area of the body
  • Fatigue and needs rest (common with flu-like symptoms)

Students who are sent home with a fever 100 degrees or higher must remain at home until the student is fever-free for 24 hours without the use of medication. In most cases this means that students will miss the following school day. Please understand that fevers can reoccur within a 24 hour time period and this policy is in the best interest for all students.

Students who are sent home due to vomiting or diarrhea must also stay home for 24 hours to ensure that these symptoms are gone before returning to school.

Please keep your student home when they are sick. It is in the best interest of your student to stay home when they are ill and helps to protect a healthy environment at school for staff and other students.
