Transitioning
Happy Kansas Day!
For the past several weeks, I have focused on post-secondary education. But this week I have been asked on several occasions about transitioning to a different school in the district. We love having your student in our building but the goal is to always put your student first. So let’s say that your student is an Academy student – they have daily point sheets that come home. Those point sheets have their level circled. When they have been at level 4 for a minimum of 10 days then we can start talking about the transition process. Our practice is to do a slow transition starting with the least threatening classes to begin with -for instance, maybe an art or pe class. While they are at the other building we monitor their progress. If they are doing well – we might add a class. As long as your child is making progress, we will continue to add classes.
One of the reasons we do a slow transition is because of our structure. We are a small school with multiple supports for each child. It would be unfair to the child to send them back to a classroom of twenty students without those supports. Plus we want the child to be successful! We do keep the parent in the loop and will meet to discuss our options as we make those transitions. So if your child is a member of our Academy group and you would like more information about the transition process please call me.
For our upstairs students, it is a different process. There are many reasons that a student may be placed at the alternative school. If a student is here to complete credits that they may be missing then they will follow these guidelines to transition back to the high school.
To transition to the high school the students must:
1. Be on track to graduate with their class
2. Have an attendance rate of 95%
3. Have no more than 3 office referrals in a 9 week period.
4. Be passing every class.
But once again, we want to do what is best for your student. Which means that we will have conversations with the student, teachers and parents.
