We will begin the DARE program on Friday, September 11th. Officer Doug Solem from Huron will be traveling over to educate our class on the importance of being aware of drugs and alcohol. Permission slips have been sent home (and hopefully returned). The kids will do all of their work in class and later this fall, there will be a DARE Graduation ceremony to celebrate their efforts and knowledge.

TUESDAY = Hawaiian Day
WEDNESDAY = Blue Day (for 5th grade)
FRIDAY = Bulldog Spirit Day

This week we read a Tall Tale about a girl named Rose that had lightning running through her veins. We are also reading a Non-fiction story about the Joplin Tornado that hit Joplin, Missouri in May 2011. The students spent some time researching information about the tornado.

We also kicked off the start of our new reading program, Reading Plus. This reading program is being used in grade 3-5 in our building and also in the Middle School to help students become better readers. It is a web-based program that helps students develop the skills they need to be proficient readers and independent learners. Students will begin to read faster with better comprehension through regular practice. They are able to access the website at home. A note will be sent home with more information.

In Math, we are learning a new strategy or method for multiplying double digits. We have not learned the algorithm or "old fashioned way" so please encourage your child to use the strategies we are working on at school. By breaking apart the numbers, they will get a deeper understanding of what the numbers mean in the partial products, as well as the final answer. Here are a few examples of the great strategies they used to multiply 35x28.
