Teachers are Learners too!
Hello WLE Family,
The best part of Friday is reflecting on the great week we have accomplished! Students work hard each day, stretching their thinking, trying out new ideas and considering different strategies.
Our support staff and teachers are learners too! This week, our staff hosted a #wleced Twitter chat. What does that mean? That means that together, we created a series of questions, logged on to Twitter all at the same time and engaged in professional learning conversations with other employees all across our district. The hashtag #wleced stands for "Walled Lake, Every Child, Every Day". Each day, our school (plus our 18 other schools in the district), post updates about what is happening in our schools.
In addition, we offered a before school session for staff to learn more about technology and how to integrate within classroom teaching. The best example we can model for our students is how we, as adults, continue to make time for learning. How do you show your child examples of life-long learning?
Remember, this upcoming week is a little shorter- half day of school on Thursday, and NO SCHOOL on Friday.
Thank you for being our partner in education. As always, if you have any concerns or have any questions, I am just a phone call, email or office visit away.
Sincerely,
Cyndi Nickel

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART
Dear Parents,
Walled Lake Elementary is participating in a very special community service program to raise funds for the American Heart Association. We’re joining in the fight against our nation’s No. 1 and No. 3 killers — cardiovascular diseases and stroke. Jump Rope for Heart is a nationwide event that helps students learn about the benefits of regular physical activity and heart health while raising funds to fight heart disease and stroke. This is WLE’s 2nd year raising funds for potentially lifesaving research and programs that help people in our community.
Most people don’t realize that the roots for cardiovascular disease in adults often begin in childhood from age 10 and even younger. That’s why it’s important to make changes now to help your children and other family members. Eat healthy foods, stay physically active and live tobacco-free.
Jump Rope for Heart is a fun and effective way to teach heart-healthy living. It emphasizes the importance of physical activity through something students really enjoy, jumping rope.
This event will be held on Thursday, March 30th from 4:00- 5:15, and is open to all WLE stu-dents. Collection envelopes and parent directions will be handed out to students in PE class the week preceding our short February break. On the 30th, Jumpers will meet in the cafeteria at 4:00 for a healthy snack (We will supply). After a snack, students will be organized into groups and the jumping will commence. We will be using both gymnasiums. After about an hour of jumping, we will reconvene in the cafeteria for popsicles and a free raffle. Volunteers will meet in the cafeteria at 3:55 for jobs (please e-mail me at williamcox@wlcsd.org if you would like to volunteer). Volunteers please bring BOTTLES or GALLONS of WATER.
Please sign your child’s consent form to allow him or her to participate. Permission slips and collection envelopes are due to Mr. Cox no later than 4:00 Wednesday, March 29. It is im-portant for me to get a count of the number of students who are participating so that we have enough popsicles and healthy snacks for everyone. The money you contribute will fund research that will save more lives each year ... maybe you are own or that of someone in your family. Our efforts can truly make a difference.
Thank you for supporting the American Heart Association and Walled Lake Elementary Physical Education program!
Mr. Cox
