Remembering Brookwood
Dear Cougar Family,
This time of year is the hardest for me. The stretch from the October PD day to Thanksgiving Break sometimes drags on as the shine of the year has worn thin, the students and the adults in the building are tired, and the time change means leaving work at dusk (or in darkness). I have to make a concerted effort to pause and take in the many gifts and blessings found in everyday occurrences. Thankfully, there are so many gifts each day at CSHS--each of our amazing staff members, the realization that 98% of our 1,997 students are rising to meet our high expectations, and the academic, athletic, and extracurricular achievements of our Cougars are among them.
Last Friday afternoon, I placed the letters each of you wrote to yourselves after our trip to Brookwood in August. My hope is that your letters help you remember the excitement of the beginning of the year and help you to refocus during the next few weeks as the semester winds down.
I would also like to share some the things about Brookwood that I needed to remind myself:
1) Everyone has unique talents and strengths, and we must help them harness those talents to derive meaning for their lives and to create meaning in our own lives.
2) We are all dependent on one another, and no one single person is more important than anyone else. Regardless of title or role, we need each other to succeed.
3) Embrace the journey! Sometimes that means being in the driver's seat knowing the destination. Other times that means settling in and seeing what happens next. Relinquishing control is hard, but sometimes the best surprises are waiting just around the corner.
4) Take risks! It was a huge risk on my part to load up 160 adults on charter busses destined for an undisclosed location. As some of you admitted later, not everyone was excited about being "kidnapped," but in the end the payout was worth the risk.
As educators, we have chosen a career path that is challenging. I am thankful to have so many people around me that are called to serve and help others. Let us remember the lessons of Brookwood as we count down to Thanksgiving Break!
Have a joyful week! And, as always, COUGAR PRIDE!
