Heights Updates

December 11, 2020

From The Principal

Hello Bulldog Families,

I hope everyone is well and looking forward to the holiday season. Today's newsletter has a lot of information on upcoming academic opportunities for students.

If you are not aware, the Heights High School PTO is an amazing organization of parents that do a wonderful job of supporting our school community. Not only do they provide teacher grants, appreciation luncheons, and help with last minute items that we for whatever reason cannot purchase with campus funds, they are also responsible for a great deal of the communication that comes from HHS. They maintain not just one Facebook page, but also an additional for each grade level as well as send their own weekly newsletter. I am so grateful for their support and the wonderful things they do for our teachers which directly impact our students in the classroom.

Due to the Covid Pandemic, they have had to get creative with their fund-raising campaign this year. If you have not already, please join them and Feed The Bulldog! They are working towards raising $20,000 by December 18 when the fundraiser closes. For more information, please see the flyer attached.

Congratulations to our Varsity Football Team! Not only did they end Lamar High School's 72 game in district winning streak, they also had an undefeated in district season and won the district Championship Game! Hope you can support them this Saturday at Delmar Stadium at 1:00 p.m. Go Bulldogs!

Happy Holidays!

Social and Emotional Support

Communities In Schools of Houston along with the Houston Height's Women's Club, put happy faces on many Heights students with today's drive-thru Holiday Party. The CIS Holiday Drive Thru was a success! For the last 6 years, the Houston Heights Women’s Club has sponsored CIS students at Heights High School for Christmas. As we are still navigating life through a pandemic, we knew we needed to do our best to show some extra love to our students who are the most at-risk for dropping out. This year we shifted our holiday luncheon with gifts to a drive thru ‘party.’ Over 30 students were given individualized gifts, specific to their needs, as well as something they wanted. Most were able to make it through the drive thru this Friday, December 11th, but some will hold off until next week. CIS and the Houston Heights Women’s Club had safety as their main goal, but were very focused on bringing the holiday spirit and enhancing moral for our students!

Information, Updates, and Action Items for ALL families

Report Cards: Grades for cycle 2 were finalized on Wednesday and report cards were mailed yesterday. If you have questions or concerns about your students grades, please communicate with their teacher.

Instructional Preference: Each grading cycle we have to code students as either virtual or face to face learners. In the system it says that we have 600+ students that should be face to face. However, we have less than 300 students on campus. If you began as face to face in October and you have changed your mind, but did not change your instructional preference officially, please email your grade level administrator so that we can have it updated.

Academic Boot-Camp: The focus for the December academic boot camp is to help students who have had the biggest struggles for the first two grading cycles. If you student has failed a course for the first or second six weeks, academic boot camp will give them additional instruction, resources, and assignments to raise a failing grade for two classes in either the first or second grading cycle. The sign up form is on the student HUB. Sign up will close on Tuesday, December 15. Students who are eligible have been emailed. Academic Boot-Camp is all VIRTUAL.

Attendance Appeals: If you have a student that has lost credit due to excessive absences (NG on report card or transcript), they can earn up to 12 hours on December 21st and 22nd during Virtual Academic Boot Camp.

Credit Recovery Classes: Students who have lost credit in previous semester will have the opportunity to earn credit recovery during Saturday School (virtual) beginning January 9, 2020. The sign up for this will be posted next week. This is different than Academic Boot-Camp. This is for students that received a failing grade on their report card in a different academic year.

Fall Finals: Our first semester ends on January 28. That is important for you to remember for two reasons. First it means students are not taking finals the last week before holiday break, so there is no early dismissal next week. Students must attend all classes next week. Semester exams for the fall semester will take place January 25th - 29th. See schedule attached.

Tech Town: Students are now able to change their passwords at home. Please see the attachment for instructions on how to change your password.

Senior News

If you missed your senior picture, January 6th is make up day. Please check your email for the sign up sheet for Ms. Harris.

Junior News

Juniors should check their HISD email account to sign up for the PSAT on January 26th. If you are taking the PSAT on January 26th, please see your 2nd period teacher to schedule a time to take the semester exam for that class.

Sophomore News

Sophomore students are in the middle of their MYP Personal Project and should be completing their research and product. They will work on their reflective report when they come back in January.

Sophomore parents and students should also begin to think about what path they will take for their junior/senior year: IB Diploma Programme, IB Career Related Programme, Advanced Placement Program, on On Level Program. We will begin hosting interest meetings in February. However, to get a jump start, visit our new IB Website: https://heightshsib.weebly.com/
