Sheiko Shark Tales

Principal Update
Dear Parents,
Hopefully you have had a great week and enjoyed our sunny weather–cold but sunny.
Did you get to go roller skating at Bonaventure last Friday? It was a great turnout–and much to many students' surprise–even I roller skated (well–I went around the ring twice–but I was on skates, so that counts!)
We started our week with our Pine Tree Kick off assemblies where our students learned how “Readers are Leaders”. We all enjoyed the great show that was sponsored by our Sheiko PTO. Many thanks for their support. Please encourage your child/ren to participate in this wonderful reading incentive program. I can truthfully say that Pine Tree was one of the only times that I could get my own son to read!! Also, thanks to Ms. VanNostrand for spearheading this program in our iCenter.
Our classrooms finished their Spelling Bees and our grade level bees will take place later this month.
Fifth grade Safety Patrol began this week. These students will be monitoring our hallways, holding our doors open in the morning and at dismissal and showing students where their buses are. We look forward to them showing us how responsible they can be as they make Sheiko School an even better place to come to school. Thanks to
Ms. Kleinstiver for putting this leadership opportunity together for our fifth graders and to Mr. Belcourt who is the sponsor of the Fifth Grade Safety Squad.
February is recognized as Black History Month across the country. It is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. The month was the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson. We will be celebrating in many ways the contributions of African Americans at Sheiko also. I will be going into each class to read books that share stories of Black American children in the 1800’s. Reading to the students is truly one of my favorite things to do. Hopefully, they will come home and share those stories with you.
Fifth grade parents, the fundraiser for the Fifth grade trip to Camp Tanuga ends on Sunday, February 5. Please make sure to get your Hungry Howie orders and money in on Monday February 6th. Soon after the fundraiser ends, we will be sending home letters to reserve your child’s spot for this great end of the year activity, so we can plan accordingly.
And do not forget our Zoom PTO meeting on Tuesday, February 7 at 6:30 PM. The Zoom link will be provided the day of.
Please read this next section with great care. We had a near miss of children being hit by a car that did not follow the procedure set up for the safety of our walkers, our car riders and our bus students.
Students dropped off MUST be dropped off in the carline. Yes, the line is long. Yes it takes some time. But it is a tried and tested safe method of getting our students out of your cars and into school.
NO, do not turn left when you leave the car line. Of course it is easier to do that. Of course it takes you out of your way sometimes. When you insist on turning left, you block the traffic behind from getting out in a timely fashion. If we all turn right, then we keep the cars moving.
And when you drop or pick up, please, please pull up as far as you can. Do not stop at the back of the driveway.
And lastly, the front parking lot is NOT for drop off or pick up at the beginning or the end of the day. It is for the buses. There is NO EARLY RELEASE AFTER 3:30pm This, again, is for the safety of our students–all of them–not just yours. And whenever possible, put those darlings on the bus. It saves a lot of time and effort for all of us.
Best Regards,
Kathy Sheiko
