Testing Season is Here!
Even though the number of STAAR EOC tests required to graduate was reduced by the state a few years ago from 15 tests to 5 tests, our students are still living in a standardized test world. And it is so easy to panic and "teach to the test". To me, this phrase means to teach the minimum skills a student needs in the exact way it is tested in order to pass a test. You might teach some "tricks" (like the "butterfly" with proportions), but when this happens, students suffer long-term. They are less prepared for future math courses, different kinds of tests, or real-world experiences in which they could apply their math skills. I know it is important to review old concepts before a test, but don't get so caught up teaching to the test that you don't actually teach the student!
KHS Math Teachers that are particularly awesome this week:
-Ms. Oneil for being an amazing intervention teacher and working with small groups during class and SMART lunch
-Mrs. Mercado for never giving up on her MMA students even though they can be a tough crew!

Article: How Poverty Affects Classroom Engagement
But as this article points out, the best advice I can give you is to build relationships with your students. "Without respect - and without taking time to get to know your students - these seven factors will mean little."
