Author Mary Lindsey Visits PSJA Memorial ECHS
Mary Lindsey, award winning young adult literature author, visited our school. She shared her experiences as a writer and discussed her books. Students had the opportunity to ask her questions. Some of her books include: Haven, Havoc, Shattered Souls, Ashes on the Waves, and Fragile Spirits. Thank you, Mrs. Nora Galvan, PSJA Library Director, for making this wonderful opportunity possible!
Border Book Bash 2018
This year PSJA ISD hosted the Border Book Bash. The annual book festival for teens and tweens was held at Yzaguirre M.S. It was open to middle and high school students from the RGV. Students had the opportunity to attend author panels, participate in a poetry slam, a creative writing workshop, games, arts & crafts, a costume contest, and a sidewalk chalk art contest. Attendees also had the opportunity to meet and greet authors and get their books autographed. The Wolverine Library would like to thank Mr. Jason Flores, English teacher, for hosting the creative writing workshop. It was a great success!

Diving into Databases
During staff development day, Mrs. Carmen Garza, Librarian, was part of the rotation for training teachers. During this hands-on professional development, teachers had the opportunity to learn about the resources available to them through MackinVia. Specifically, teachers created accounts to explore the Learning Express and Testing & Education Resource Center (TERC) databases. These databases provide practice and reviews for STAAR, TSI, college entrance exams, AP exams, and we discovered there are also lessons for the different subject areas. It was a very productive day!
TSI Review with MackinVia!
Teachers have been bringing classes to the library to have their students review for the TSI exam. With TERC (Testing & Education Reference Center), students can create accounts and practice taking the three sections of the TSI test. Come by the library if you'd like to bring in your classes to use any of our resources available through MackinVia.
Parent Outreach
The Wolverine Library had the opportunity to present to parents during the monthly meeting hosted by our parent educator, Brenda Alvarez. Carmen Garza, Librarian, presented to parents on what the library has to offer their children. Topics discussed were: hours of operation, website, databases, books, and other relevant topics. Parents had the opportunity to ask Mrs. Garza questions as well.

Day of the Dead Display and Celebration
This year, our school participated in the Day of the Dead Display Contest sponsored by the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV). Thanks to the support and encouragement of our principal, Dr. Rowdy Vela, we took the challenge and "ran" with it! A committee was formed and many clubs and organizations were involved in bringing this beautiful work of art to fruition:
- Spanish Club and classes
- GROWL Book Club
- Library volunteers
- Art classes
- Construction classes
- Theatre Tech class
- Cosmetology classes
- Food Science classes
- DECA
- Mariachis
The theme for the display was El proceso de la muerte and the display was created in honor of loved ones of our Wolverine Family.
PSJA Memorial ECHS won 1st place for its display!

Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil's name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr. But what Starr does-or does not-say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life
