Facebook Analytics
Which is Most Important?
Reach
Reach falls into 3 categories:
- Organic- number of unique people who see your free original post in their newsfeed.
- Paid- number of unique people who see your paid post.
- Viral- number of unique people who see your post or page mentioned in a story by a friend. These include Likes, Sharing, or Commenting.
Because of FB's EdgeRank algorithm and other factors, such as publication frequency or post timing, not all of your followers will see every single one of your posts.
You can increase the percentage of people who see your posts by:
- Increasing number of followers
- Increasing engagement
- Paying to promote a post
Impressions
For example, if a follower sees your post on their newsfeed that is one impression. If they see it again when a friend shares, comments, or likes the post, then that is two impressions.
Impressions fall into 3 categories:
- Organic- number of times your post was displayed for free in newsfeed or page.
- Paid- number of times your paid post was displayed.
- Viral- number of times your post or page mentioned in a story by a friend. These include Likes, Sharing, or Commenting.
Note: Impressions can lead to increased followers, which in turn can lead to increased Reach and Engagement.
Engagement
Our Goals? Reach & Engagement
Reach and Engagement are Co-dependent!
Reach is necessary to build Engagement and higher Engagement increases the rate of Reach
Invite people to like and follow your page!
Then, post good content and re-post really good content.
Respond to people who comment on your posts(positive only!)
How to Increase FB Reach and Engagement
- Select best posting times and frequency(schedule posts for peak times)
- Use visuals- photos, graphics, or videos catch attention
- Engage your audience- polls, questions, ask for comments, reply to comments
- Write Posts that are clear and concise, not too long
- Cross post your FB link to your Twitter and your Twitter link to your FB to drive traffic
- Tag people, businesses, other schools, etc. in your posts and they will help promote you
- Repeat important or exciting posts
These are generally the best times for schools to post to FB, but you should analyze your FB data to determine peak times for your school.
- Thursday: 2-3 PM
- Monday- Thursday: 11 AM-5 PM
- Saturday and Sunday: late evening
Examples of great posts for schools
- Teacher/admin selfies at school events, during lunch, in classrooms
- Videos at school events, games, etc.
- Photos of students engaged in classrooms
- New teachers and students
- Ask questions: What was your favorite part of family reading night? What's your favorite tip for Kindergarten parents who are anxious about the start of school.
- Post a challenge and ask parents/students to post their response: How many weekends left until your child graduates high school? What fun thing did you do with your child this past weekend? What funny thing happened to your and your child this week? Send a sweet note in your child's lunchbox- post a photo on our page.
- Encourage people to "check-in" when they visit your school or event.
- Create a photo album of photos sent you from homecoming dance or game, dress up days, first day of school, last day of HS, etc.
The Purpose of Spotlight
Be sure to include people in your photo submissions for Spotlight. It's ok to show students engaged in school work, but please make sure that more often than not, we can see faces, not just backs of heads or hands. If you are including a photo of school work, please also include photos of the students doing the activity.
*Artwork is a bit different. Sometimes the art speaks for itself. But, when possible, take a photo of the student beside their artwork or holding it.
Unless you have a signed 'Opt Out' form for a student, it is ok to show faces in photos. Our viewers(parents and relatives) want to see their kids engaged in learning and having fun.

Videos from news sources work well also because they will have a URL that I can embed.
