What are Number Talks?
This year all classrooms will be participating in a brief math routine, called Number talks (or "math talks"). To start a number talk, the teacher gives the students a SHORT math problem to solve — but the students are not allowed to use a calculator or paper & pencil. Teachers get all students involved, help them strengthen fluency, intuition, and mental math strategies, improve their ability to explain and critique solutions, and allow teachers a valuable window into their thinking.
