"Upward Together"

Building Community

Building a safe, nurturing, and caring community in our classrooms is an ongoing commitment. Last year staff received training on restorative practices - specifically with implementing the community circle. This year we are moving forward together with a commitment to hold a community circle at least twice a week. The purpose of the circle is to have every child be heard, reveal something about themselves, and to connect with others so that they may be seen in the larger class community.

What are Number Talks?

This year all classrooms will be participating in a brief math routine, called Number talks (or "math talks"). These are short discussions among a teacher and students about how to solve a particular mental math problem. ... To start a number talk, the teacher gives the students a SHORT math problem to solve — but the students are not allowed to use a calculator or paper & pencil. Teachers get all students involved, help them strengthen fluency, intuition, and mental math strategies, improve their ability to explain and critique solutions, and allow teachers a valuable window into their thinking.
