Daily 5/Reading
We picked up right where we left off before break this week. We added "to" to our sight word list which was sent home in their binders before break. Please continue to practice reading and writing these words at home. The students were introduced to two blends this week as well - ch and sh. We worked together to brainstorm words that we knew that included those sounds. Some ideas the students offered were "chip" and "Charlie" as well as "ship" and "shiver". We read the story "Can I Pat It?" as a whole group and then in pairs. We also discussed some components of sentences; they need to have a noun ("person, place, or thing") and a verb (an "action" word) as well as a capital letter at the beginning, "finger spaces" between words, and punctuation at the end.
Math
Math was a lot of fun this week as we started to learn about estimation! The students enjoyed looking at bags of Skittles and writing down their estimation or "best guess" to see how close they could get to the actual number. The fun thing about estimating is that you don't have to get the exact right answer! We also painted snowmen and estimated and then checked to see how many connecting cubes tall they were.
Social Studies
We began discussing where we live in Social Studies this week. We imagined we were at home and looking out our window and asked ourselves the question "What do I see?". We then drew that image and discussed it. We talked about our community and the differences between homes and businesses.
