SHMS Weekly Info

April 6th to April 10th

Good Evening Stone Hill Students, Parents, and Staff,

I hope that everyone in our community is doing well and continues to stay healthy and safe over Spring Break! We cannot thank our community enough for your patience and support as we continue to navigate these uncharted waters.

We have created an SHMS Distance Learning Site for our community that consolidates the various school and county references. We will continue to update this site with important information. We are hoping that this will allow our families one location to access important information.

New Updates and Reminders:

  • Spring Break Meals: The LCPS meals service will continue to provide breakfasts and lunches for students throughout the week that was designated as Spring Break on the LCPS 2019-2020 academic calendar (April 6-April 10). From Monday, April 6, through Wednesday, April 8, the meal service at the schools and those delivered via school bus will continue on the current schedule. Meals for Thursday, April 9, and Friday, April 10, will be made available on Wednesday, April 8, during the regular meal program at schools and on buses. Please visit the interactive map to identify the nearest bus stop for mobile service; the list of schools where meals are being provided is also available online.

  • Monitoring of Student Devices: This is a reminder to all Stingrays that LCPS monitors all comments/messages and the Acceptable Use Policy is still in effect. When you are using your issued LCPS Chromebook or LCPS Google account please make sure you are using the technology appropriately for educational purposes.

  • Jive Phone Service: When we return from Spring Break, teachers will have access to an internet phone service so that they can make outgoing calls. At this time, we ask that you email staff if you or your child would like to speak with them. Our staff will then use this service to call you back. Of course, you can always continue to correspond over email as well.

If you or your family are in need of anything, please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly. Our community is here to support anyone in need during this challenging and unusual time. Please see information below from our Parent Liaison on how you can donate and help support families in need.

SHMS Weekly Announcements and Highlights

Virginia Math League

Stone Hill has come in first place in 7th grade and in 8th grade in the state-wide VML test given in February. The 6th grade came in 3rd place. Arnav led the Stone Hill 6th grade team with a perfect score, one of 4 in the state. The 7th grade, thanks to Rohan, Dhruv, Soham, Riddhiman, and Rishabh far outdistanced the 2nd and 3rd place teams. The 8th grade was led by Kunal, Arun, Naisha, Krish, and Venkat. Kunal and Arun tied for the second highest score in the state in 8th grade, and Rohan and Dhruv tied for the second highest score in the state in 7th grade. All 1st and 2nd place finishers will receive a plaque and Stone Hill will receive 1st place plaques for 7th and 8th grade to add to our large collection.

Although we are following social distancing guidelines, the Stone Hill Math Counts team is still at work and competing. Using Google Hangouts and an Interactive whiteboard, they are training and competing in Aretelabs, Purple Comet, and NLMC. Stay tuned for more good news.

Continuity of Education

Quarter 3 Grades and Make Up Work: The last day of Quarter 3 will be considered to be March 11th, which was the last day of school prior to the closure. Quarter 3 grades for middle school students will be determined based on work completed through March 11th. Teachers will provide opportunities for students to make up missing work and assign a grade to that missing work. Secondary students have until April 17th to turn in missing assignments or to complete reassessments, and teachers will enter Quarter 3 grades into the gradebook and complete the grade reporting process by April 24th.

Quarter 4 Grades: Beginning April 15th, teachers will provide distance learning experiences specifically for their students that include a focus on new skills and knowledge. Teachers will use the gradebook to provide feedback and track student progress from April 15th through the end of the school year. While teachers may assign numeric values for assignments in the gradebook to track student progress, grades will not be reflected on the report card and no Quarter 4 grade will be reported in the Student Information System.

The work students complete and the feedback teachers provide during this time is not meant to replace the day-to-day instruction students would have received at school. The work students complete and feedback teachers provide during Quarter 4 is meant to maintain a continuity of learning, track progress, and foster a growth mindset for students throughout the school closure and until we are able to return to school.

Spring Break (April 6th to 10th): Although school facilities are closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year, continuity of education will be provided on days designated as student days on the adopted LCPS academic calendar for 2019-2020. Therefore, distance learning opportunities are not scheduled from Monday, April 6th to Friday, April 10th. Some teachers might provide optional learning opportunities for students through Google Classroom and you are welcome to access any resources on the LCPS Continuity of Education Page.

Teacher Professional Development Days (April 13th and 14th): Teachers will be engaged in professional development and planning on April 13th and 14th. Students will continue to use the learning activities provided by teachers on those days and will begin new instruction on Wednesday, April 15th. At that time, the core subject areas: English, Math, Science, and Social Science teachers will incorporate an online learning program called Edmentum. This will be used to supplement the learning experiences these teachers are creating for students through Google Classroom. More information regarding the Edmentum platform will be coming in the near future.

Please continue to monitor your email from LCPS to ensure that you receive the most recent information regarding learning opportunities for our students. Please continue to visit the LCPS COVID-19 Preparedness at LCPS website for the most up to date information.

Mobile Hope, whose mission is to improve the lives of young people, 24 years of age or younger, who are precariously housed or homeless in Loudoun County. Mobile Hope will continue to focus on collecting food and hygiene products and distributing them into neighborhoods starting Monday, March 16. Their bus will pull into the neighborhoods, and honk its horn, signaling to students that breakfast and lunch items are available. The project name is Listen For the Honk. Mobile Hope is committed to this program throughout the duration of the school closure. The need for food donations remains great, as this project will run at least through March 27 based on the latest announcement. If you would like to donate food, you may bring it to their facility at 741 Miller Drive in Leesburg, or send it through their Amazon wishlist. If you would like to donate financially, you may donate through Facebook or their website, www.mobilehopeloudoun.org.

Loudoun Hunger Relief provides fresh groceries for the whole family, plus they can help find further assistance to meet other needs through their network of partners. They will continue their regular hours for distribution, and add more hours as well as a mobile market to reach out into the community and be more accessible. Please go to https://www.loudounhunger.org to find out how you can donate or help.

Finally, if you would prefer to donate a grocery or Walmart gift card directly to the school for use with our families please contact me (cristin.miller@lcps.org) and we will work out a way to get that from you. Thank you for always stepping up when asked and for being such a "Ray of Light" in our school community. Please reach out with any questions or concerns and I will do my best to answer them for you. Until then, be well, and wash those hands!
