General News! Week of November 7-10th
Monday,Monday...Let's do it !
Last Call! If your child has not returned their Federal Impact Form and/or the Title I Compact form, please, please, please, return them tomorrow morning if possible.
Just a quick reminder that our team will be taking a Field Trip on Friday, November 18th. We will be headed to Okefenokee Swamp Park (Obadiah's Okefenok) in Waycross, where we will be able to tie in many aspects of our curriculum. Permission slips went home last week. If you have not seen this, or your child has "misplaced theirs", have them get another one from us.
The cost will be $10 per student. If this creates a hardship for anyone, please let us know as soon as possible. This will be a great educational experience, and we would love for everyone to participate. We need to have all permission slips and monies turned in by Tuesday, November 15th, so that we can finalize our buses, lunch counts, etc. Thank you for your help with this!
Another 8th grade concern has been a lack of respect for other people's property by many of our students. This includes bathrooms that have been used inappropriately, food items being thrown during lunch, chrome books that have had keys removed and faces scratched, classroom supplies that are broken just for something to do, students lunches and snacks being taken,etc... These problems have become such a concern because we are losing instructional time while these behaviors are being dealt with. Please address these concerns with your child in an effort to remedy these situations.
Upcoming Dates to Remember:
Nov.9th- SMMS SPIRIT DAY!!! Wear your red and blue!
Nov. 11th- Veteran's Day Holiday/ No School
Nov. 14th- Fall Picture Retake Day
Nov. 16th- 2nd Qt. Progress Reports go home
Language Arts- Ms. Waxman
In language arts:
This week we will finalize our research of the Civil War Era. Each student has been assigned a topic and will be sharing the information they have discovered with their classmates. This will be in the form of radio broadcasts. They will be using this information in creating their scripts for this. The writing focus will be on accuracy, as well as trying to keep a sense of the times with their "word choice" and sentence structure.
On Friday we began our new novel,Behind Rebel Lines,by Seymour Reit. Reit is well know for his creation of Casper the Friendly Ghost, and his work on many other cartoon classics: Little Lulu, Rocky & Bullwinkle,Archie, and many more. In chapter 1 we met our main character, Emma Edmonds. Emma is determined to help the Union Army, and has figured out a way to join up even though she is a woman. She becomes a master of disguise as we follow her risky journey...behind rebel lines!
The root word unit this week is for Forward and Backwards: pro and retro . This unit has a StudyStack link in Google classroom. The quiz will be this Thursday.
A quick reminder that Book 2 of the Independent (Choice) Reading for 2nd quarter is due by Thursday, November 17th. There are already a number of students who have already completed this, while others have not completed Book 1! Please take a minute to touch base with your student to see how they are coming...most just need to get through their first book successfully to see the benefits of this practice. Students have been asked to bring their books to school with them daily this quarter. We will focus part of our school time to this valuable practice, but this will not exclude the need for them to be reading at home.
I am seeing more participation with both TweenTribune and with Independent Choice Reading, but there are still a few "die hards" who have not completed any, or a very small part of these assignments. I have sent home a quick slip to be signed and returned in a final effort to get everyone on board. Please help them in any way you can.
This are both necessary in helping them boost their reading grades, comprehension, and lexile levels! We will be taking a reading checkpoint next Monday.
Have a great week!
Social Studies- Mr. Salser
This week we are studying the Antebellum period and the lingering slavery issue. The students will be able to discuss and explain how the U.S. from its birth, put off the slavery issue until the Civil War erupted in 1861. We will also look at the issue of States Rights and the role it plays during the Antebellum period and we will discuss the economic strategies of the North and the South.
Math- Mrs. McKinney
Math - Monday and Wednesday we will be estimating the square roots of non-perfect squares. Tuesday the students will be taking a test over units 1 and 2. If they take their time, they should be fine. Thursday we will begin solving equations with fractions and decimals. I will have videos assigned in the textbook for the students to watch at home if they get confused. All students have access to www.connected.mcgraw-hill.com . If your student does not know their password, email me and I will send it to you. There are MANY different helps in the online textbook.
Science- Mrs. Allen
This week in Science, students will be creating Energy Source Projects. I have created a Kahoot that the kids can be using to practice for our upcoming mastery assessment on Energy. Students can log in to my kahoot create account. The login info will be posted in my google classroom, as well as directions on how to practice Kahoot on their own device by themselves. Any device with internet should work for this site. I’m looking forward to seeing which group can convince the class that their energy source is the best on Thursday! Also, if your student has not yet finished their Matter mastery assessment, please have them come into my classroom before homeroom or stay after school on Thursday. Please make sure they know, that score will be counted as 10% of their overall science grade. If it is missing, a zero in that category will bring them down an entire letter grade. J
