WHAT IS BLOCK SCHEDULE?

A block schedule is a system for scheduling the middle- or high-school day, typically by replacing a more traditional schedule of six or seven 40–50 minute daily periods with longer class periods that meet fewer times each day and week. For Legacy, this will mean that students have each class for a 90-minute period. So what does this look like?

For 6th Grade:

6th grade is self-contained, meaning they have the same teacher for all of their core content areas. This means they won’t really notice the block schedule as their teachers have the flexibility throughout their day to extend lessons as needed. All 6th graders have PE in the 2nd period block, which means 6th graders will have PE on Tuesdays and Fridays in the first block of their day (8:30-10:00).

For 7th and 8th Grade:

Students in grades 7 and 8 will attend their odd classes (Periods 1, 3, 5) on Mondays and Thursdays, and will attend their even classes (Periods 2, 4, 6) on Tuesdays and Fridays. They will attend Point break every day for 60 minutes at the end of their day.

For 9th-12th Grade:

Students in grades 9-12 will attend their odd classes (Periods 1, 3, 5, 7) on Mondays and Thursdays, and will attend their even classes (Periods 2, 4, 6, Point Break) on Tuesdays and Fridays.

All students, grades 6-12, will attend all of their classes on Wednesdays for 30 minutes (with the exception of 9th-12th IVC courses). These shorter classes on Wednesday are an opportunity for students to work on projects and group work, ask questions on recent lessons, and for teachers to reteach and review concepts students are struggling with. As a reminder, school begins at 9:30am on Wednesdays for all students.

If you would like to learn more about Block Schedule, and why we are following this model at Legacy, here is an interesting excerpt from an article published by the National Education Association regarding Block Schedules:

"There’s been a desire to get out of that rut (the instructional limitations of a traditional schedule that have frustrated teachers) and give teachers a little more flexibility in the instructional strategies they can use in longer periods of time, which allow for deeper thinking and project-based instruction," Rettig explains.

There is, however, another compelling issue that has come out of the shadows over the past few years, says Denise Pope, senior lecturer at the Stanford Graduate School of Education and co-founder of Challenge Success, a program that promotes student well-being and engagement in school.

“If you follow kids over the course of a school day, you'd see that they're exhausted. The entire education system has created a pressure cooker for students and staff,” says Pope. “School is now all about the grades, it’s all about the test, the homework, and it's really just a lot of jumping through hoops."

Writing in The New York Times, Vicki Abeles asked, "Is the Drive for Success Making Our Children Sick?" Pope says yes, particularly in high schools where the pressure to excel has reached alarming dimensions. Until recently the issue been ignored or at least shrugged off as some sort of rite of passage on the road to success. "More parents and educators are now seeing what that stress does to the body, what it does to the psyche and what it does to student engagement," Pope says. "They know stress is a problem and they want solutions."

The majority of schools still operate on a traditional seven-period schedule, with each class lasting between 40-50 minutes. Block scheduling, a popular alternative for some schools, can mean different things to different people because there is no one-size-fits-all model. The most prevalent template is the "A/B" schedule in which students sign up for eight classes every school year, taking four of them on the 'A' days and the other four on the 'B' days. All classes meet for longer periods, usually around 80-90 minutes. Under the less common "4x4" model, students split up their eight courses into two semesters, again meeting for longer periods.

Pope says a block schedule creates a "saner school day" by slowing down the pace, reducing homework and freeing up more time for hands-on learning and collaboration - "the things that we know will make the learning stick better and take some of the pressure off students." Pope also advocates starting school later.

ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL PROTOCOLS

Our Arrival/Dismissal system requires that everyone follow the proper procedures in order for it to work! Here are some important protocols to follow to make sure arrival and dismissal is SMOOTH.

When pulling into the lot for drop off:

  • Please pull all the way in and turn at the last driveway on your left

  • Please follow ALL posted signs and follow the direction of any staff members.

  • DO NOT turn off your car at any time

  • DO NOT exit your car at any time

  • Pull all the way forward to the far North end of the classroom building- this is where all students will exit their vehicle.

  • Students should exit their cars safely and quickly then walk to their 1st period class line. Staff members will be available to help!

When pulling into the lot for pick up:

  • Please pull all the way in and turn at the last driveway on your left

  • Please follow ALL posted signs and follow the direction of any staff members.

  • DO NOT turn off your car at any time

  • DO NOT exit your car at any time

  • Pull all the way forward to the far North end of the classroom building- this is where all students will queue up for pick up

  • PLEASE NOTE: You are more than welcome to park in our main lot and have your student walk around to meet you at your car, rather than queueing up in the line. You are also more than welcome to arrange a pick up location off site (for example across the street in the Dunkin Donuts shopping center) as students are allowed to leave campus at the end of the day on foot.

PLEASE do not use the main office loop for pick up or drop off. It causes major back ups in our traffic flow. This loop is not an option for arrival or dismissal. Thank you for your attention to this.

Most of all, please practice PATIENCE and GRACE in order to keep everyone calm and safe. THANK YOU!

LMA DRESS CODE GUIDELINES

In case you're planning to do any back to school clothes shopping, we wanted to take the opportunity to remind of our dress code guidelines.

Legacy Magnet Academy Dress Code Guidelines:

Legacy Magnet Academy requests that all students dress for success. Coming to school dressed for success helps promote pride and professionalism and reminds us all that our primary focus is on academics and a productive school experience. The quality of work students produce at school can be affected by their personal appearance. Students should dress with reasonable standards of cleanliness and modesty. Clothing and hairstyles are to be worn that will not draw the undue attention of peers or be distracting to class instruction.

In order to provide a safe learning environment free from major distractions, school-wide dress code guidelines have been developed. The following specific dress code guidelines will be expected and enforced:

Appropriate dress and personal appearance at (school) and at school-related activities shall not include any clothing, attire or accessory that by its appearance, arrangement, trademark, fit, or any other attribute, is unsafe; disruptive; unhealthful; obscene; profane; ethnically, racially or sexually degrading; libelous or slanderous; exposing undergarments; provocative or revealing; advocating unlawful behavior or illegal substances; or suggesting or promoting any affiliation with street gangs or other groups that commit unlawful acts.

Parents may call the school at any time for clarification prior to purchase of school attire. If students attend school dressed inappropriately, different attire can be provided. Repeat violations may result in disciplinary action. Parent support in encouraging students to dress appropriately is paramount.

LUNCH

Lunch is offered free of charge to all students. Taking a meal from nutrition services requires students to take one entree and one fruit or vegitable at minimum (they may take more). TUSD is requesting that ALL families complete the Income Survey (Use link below). This form, previously used to apply for free or reduced lunch is now used for all families, and helps determine funding recieved by TUSD from the state. Please take a moment to complete the form, regardless of income status. It will help TUSD!

We do not allow students to order food and do not allow food drop offs during the school day. Your student may choose to bring their lunch but we do not have student refrigerators or microwaves. Rest assured that if your student has forgotten their lunch, lunch will be provided by the school. Please do not drop off food to the main office. Thank you for your cooperation.

PE at Legacy Magnet Academy

At LMA, we pride ourselves on offering a unique and varied PE program. In the 2022-23 school year, students had the opportunity to explore nutrition, golf, archery, frisbee golf and pickleball, just to name a few. Since we are on a block schedule, students will have PE every other day. On PE days, students are required to come to school prepared to participate in PE, wearing comfortable clothing and athletic footwear. Students at Legacy will not “dress out” or change for PE, and we do not have PE uniforms. If students would like to bring their athletic shoes to school in their backpacks to change into at the beginning of PE, that is absolutely fine.

Our Legacy TIDE will RISE

Please watch the video below to learn more about our schoolwide expectations, RISE.

COLLEGE COURSES VS AP COURSES

Legacy Magnet Academy offers college courses, taught by IVC professors, to all students starting in 7th grade through dual enrollment with Irvine Valley College. This is a required component of the LMA program. Students will receive Pass/No Pass marks in 7th and 8th grade and weighted letter grades in grades 9-12, along with college credit. LMA does not offer AP courses through the College Board because students will all enroll in college courses through IVC, making it unnecessary to take AP exams to gain college credit.
