Sherburn Hungate Weekly News - Summer Term 2 - Issue 7

Big picture

A word from Mr Broom.

Well that's my first year as headteacher now over. When people say time flies when you're having fun, it certainly has for me. It's been an absolute pleasure to work with the staff and your wonderful children in what has been a great year for our school. We're now in a super place to build on this year's successes as we welcome new faces and new approaches to learning to make sure every child succeeds in their primary schooling.

Thank you also for the many wonderful report comments that celebrate the hard work of all our staff. They sincerely deserve it.

So what does next year bring? We've done so much this year. Shouldn't we just sit back and celebrate what we have? Absolutely not! We're moving up a gear in September and the teaching staff have been working together to secure exciting learning opportunities that we know the children will love.

I first wrote to you all on 5th September 2017 stating that we should celebrate our family and community around our school. I also stated then that I felt truly honoured to be the headteacher of the school and this sentiment has only grown this year. Long may it continue.

On behalf of the staff and governors, have a wonderful summer and we look forward to welcoming you back on Tuesday 4th September at 0845.

Martyn Broom

The School Garden - Clear Plastic Bottles Needed

It is with great pleasure that I announce that the Sherburn Rotary club will be supporting us over the summer in clearing out the school garden and turning it into a useable ecology area featuring a new pond, stage, planting beds and hopefully a plastic bottle greenhouse. And that's where we need your help. Over the summer, we need to collect 1500 clear plastic pop bottles of the 2 litre variety. They have to be clear! Please can you all save them and bring them in on the first day back in September? It will be a great help to us.

New Morning Routines

On Tuesday 4th September, you'll notice a change to our morning routine. We're expecting all children to line up at 0840 where their teacher will then collect them from the playground and lead them into school.

School doors will then close at 0845 and any children will be late after this time.

Mobiles On Site

We're all about communication at Sherburn Hungate and we're encouraging all our parents/carers to refrain from using mobile phones on the school site when bringing and collecting children. We're confident that all our children will be keen to share their day with you and it's important that we give them the opportunity to share their learning. Thank you for your support.

School Meal Information

We're introducing new lunch routines in September, aimed at maximising the time that children spend outside on active pursuits. During morning registration, the children will be given three choices. A hot meal, a jacket potato option and a sandwich option. The kitchen will then prepare a set meal to match the chosen option.

So what's different? Well there will be items on your child's plate that they may not have chosen before but we're hoping that we can foster a desire for a range of healthy lunch options with a balanced range of vegetables. Jam sandwiches will no longer be an option!

As you know the school meal price will increase to £2.30 per day in September; the cost of meals for the first half term will be £89.70. Meals for one week costs £11.50.

Nursery Applications for September 2018

Just a quick note to let you know we still have places available for our Nursery session in September 2018. If you would like a place, please contact the school office.

It's important that children attend school regularly and at Sherburn Hungate we recognise that excellent attendance leads to excellent achievement. Fact!

Congratulations to our Year 2 & Year 5 children who are our attendance champions in school this week with 98.8%.

Our average attendance this week is 94.4%.

We have a small number of children whose attendance is well below the national expectations. These children are known as persistently absent when their attendance falls below 90%. I will be making telephone calls to parents of these children.

Thank you for your continued support with our attendance drive. It is really appreciated.
