Principal's Corner
Riverview Families,
As you may know, I am a parent who sends my kids to school each day just like you. When they get home I am excited to learn all about their day but inevitably when I ask "how was school today?", get a pretty basic response: "It was good." Maybe your experience is similar.
What I've learned is that if I want to get different answers, I need to ask different (and better) questions. Here are some questions we encourage you to ask your child as they get home from school. They are sure to lead to better conversations and help you learn more about the Riverview school experience through your child's eyes:
- What made you smile or laugh today?
- Can you tell me an example of kindness that you showed to someone at school today?
- What did you do that showed creativity?
- Who did you sit with at lunch? What did you talk about?
- Was anyone in your class gone today?
- Tell me something you know today that you didn't know yesterday.
- What was the hardest rule to follow today?
- If you could change one thing that happened to you today, what would you change?
- Did your teacher have a good day today? What made them smile? What frustrated them?
- If you could switch seats with anyone in your class, who would it be? Why?
- What kind of person were you today?
You know your child best so you know which of these questions (or others like them) are most like to resonate and lead to a positive conversation at home. As always, we appreciate your partnership and know you are doing everything you can to make sure your child comes to school each day with a positive attitude and ready to learn. Please know that when you do that, our work becomes easier and more impactful.
Best wishes for a great week!
Shawn Peck
Principal

Consider Donating Unwrapped Toys For Those in Need This Holiday Season; See Below For More Ways to Support Area Children
Riverview Elementary is a drop off location for the “Toys for Town” collection drive. Toys for Town is an annual toy drive organized by the Farmington Police Department to help make the holiday season special for children in our community. The program provides local families a holiday meal kit and gifts for their children. In 2022, there were 400 children from 117 families that benefited from this program. The police department is anticipating similar numbers in 2023.
This year, the Farmington Police Department is setting an ambitious fundraising goal of $40,000, which would match 2022's donations. Along with the fundraising goal, collection bins for unwrapped toy donations have been set out at area businesses and city buildings. (See full list of locations below). They will be available until Monday, Dec. 11. In addition, monetary donations to the Toys for Town program will be accepted at the police department.
If your family needs this program, the department will take request calls through Dec. 11. Call 651-280-6TOY (6869).
Volunteers are needed to wrap and deliver toys on Saturday, Dec. 16. The wrapping event will be held at Farmington High School, 20655 Flagstaff Ave., starting at 9 a.m. Just show up at 9 a.m. ready to wrap!
Toys for Town tree ornaments are available for purchase! Proceeds will benefit the Toys for Town program. Stop by the police department, or the downtown Farmington Liquors location to pick one up.
