Mrs. Faccio's 4th Grade Newsletter

Welcome Back

The children came in with a myriad of moods this morning but they all had one thing in common ~ Their excitement to share all about their holiday season! We made picture collages using our ipads and will share them tomorrow. On another note, students were placed in groups today to help foster more of a team environment. We did some team building activities to work on the 21st Century benchmark skill of collaboration. This includes interacting in a respectful, productive manner and adapting to various roles and responsibilities within a group. We discussed 5 roles in a group and students assigned themselves to one of them. They will get a chance to do every role as we will switch each week.

What's Up in the Classroom?

Writing - 4th grade students will all have a grammar focus for the next couple of weeks. We will be working on parts of speech, punctuation and standard English usage.

Spelling - Students will have a new word sort next week. They did not have one for this week since it's so short!!

Social Studies - We started our American Indian study today. Students will learn about the original inhabitants of Wisconsin and the important role in the settlement of the United States that they played. They will also learn about the current status of local tribes and the positive and negative interactions of American Indians with Euro-American people and the American government. Finally, students will learn about how the American Indians perspective on land differs from the Europeans and Americans.

Math - We are still working on our algebra unit. Upon completion, we will move to measurement. Students have already pretested for this unit.

Reading - Students will be testing next week on the benchmark "Interprets information presented visually, orally or quantitatively (graphs, diagrams, time lines, animations, etc.) and explaining how the information contributes to an understanding of the text in which it appears.

Winter MAP test

We are trying something different with the winter MAP test ~ Doing it on the iPad! There will be a test class (not us) to see if it runs smoothly. If it does, we will text within the next week or two. If it doesn't, we will test in the computer lab on Thursday the 9 and Monday the 13. Reading will be first, followed by math.
