Glenealy School Newsletter
12th September 2019
Message from Chris
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
An improvement in the weather this week has been much appreciated by all in school - with plenty of fabulous learning experiences on offer for the children. Year 5 welcomed an inspirational talk from ‘Living Oceans’, our units are in full swing in all year groups, and our girls netball team went out to their first ‘warm up’ competition of the year.
It was also great to see so many parents at the hugely successful PTA Bingo evening last Thursday. Mr Sangster’s bingo calling lived up to its legendary reputation, and the whole of the PTA delivered yet another fabulous event. We would like to thank all the parents who supported the event along with our wonderful PTA for organising this successful and fun evening!
The next PTA event to add to your diaries is the PTA Annual General Meeting. The AGM will be held on Thursday 26th September. You can find details of the AGM in the PTA section of the Newsletter below - if you would like to attend, please follow the link and fill in the digital form. We look forward to seeing you all there.
We are pleased to announce that we have a vacancy available on the School Council for a parent representative. Tomorrow, we will send a letter and digital form for you to nominate potential candidates for the position. The letter will explain more about the position - please look out for this separate letter tomorrow.
Next Tuesday morning we will hold our first Parents as Partners workshop in the Library. Heather Darling, our technology coach, will be sharing with parents useful and important information about how to help keep your children safe online by setting up parental controls on digital devices. There is still plenty of space on the workshop - please find details below to sign up.
Thank you to all the parents who filled in our online survey asking which workshops you would like us to run to support your understanding of your child’s learning at Glenealy. You will find a list of proposed events for the year below.
Parents of Years 5 and 6 children please also note the request below for information about each child’s journey to school. We are collecting information about this for health and safety reasons, and we are compiling a record of those older children who walk to or from school on their own. Thank you in advance for your support with this.
I hope you all have a fantastic remainder of the week and a good weekend beyond.
Best Regards,
Chris

Travel to School Arrangements - Years 5 and 6
The school is currently collecting information about how Years 5 and 6 students travel to and from school. This survey is focusing on Years 5 and 6 because we expect all younger students to either be accompanied by an adult or catch the school bus.
Please look out for the Travel Arrangements eNotice which will be sent out tomorrow.

For Year 6 students, the submission of the Year 7 secondary transfer application on Gateway commenced on Monday 2nd September and will close on Friday 13th September 2019.
Allocation for secondary schools will be determined by residential zone at the start of Year 6.
For further details, parents should refer to the information available on the ESF website at http://www.esf.edu.hk/year6-to-year7-key-dates/ for key dates and http://www.esf.edu.hk/esf-zones for school zones.

Shoes collection for Kenya-Tomorrow 13th September
Hello, I’m Henry and I’m in 4M.
Over the summer holidays I went with my family to Kenya and while there we worked with the charity KipGiving. We visited some villages and gave kids second-hand shoes that people from HK donated. The kids were really happy and excited. Did you know that in Kenya if you don’t have shoes, you can’t attend school?
I am asking people to help by donating old shoes so we can help kids in Kenya go to school. Instead of throwing your shoes to the rubbish, I will collect them and we will send them to Kenya. If you don’t have old shoes to donate you can help out with the cost of postage by donating $10, or even more if you’d like.
Tomorrow, on Friday 13th September, please bring in your old shoes (good quality that may no longer fit you), new socks or a $10 donation (to help with postage of the shoes to Kenya). I will set up a table in the playground next Friday morning before school starts.
Thanks,
Henry
Do you want to...
help kids in Kenya go to school?
prevent sending unwanted shoes to landfill?
give shoes to kids who have none?
Without shoes, kids in Kenya cannot go to school!
Please donate:
Footwear that doesn’t fit or that you don’t want anymore
New socks
$10 to go towards shipping the shoes to Kenya.
Bring to school on Friday 13th September 2019

Has your child's visa status changed?
As a reminder, all children attending an ESF school need the appropriate and valid visa status to do so. Please inform the school if your child's visa status changes. For more information, you may refer to the Immigration section on the ESF website.
