A MESSAGE FROM MS. ELLISON
Dear Glen Grove Families,
Your voice matters! Please take a moment to fill out the 5 Essentials Survey. Currently, we only have 5% of our families who have responded to the survey. Not only is this survey part of our school report card, but we also use your input to inform our school improvement group. The survey can be found here.
Conferences are next week. This is an important time to connect with your child’s teacher. We hope you find this time productive and meaningful. I think you will be amazed by how much your child has grown! If you have not signed up for a conference, please reach out to your child’s teacher so that this can be arranged.
Monday, February 27th is Mix It Up Monday! This is a party in the cafeteria during lunch where we mix up seating and have students sit with other classmates. Our fifth grade student leadership team decided that the theme is DISCO! Feel free to have your child wear any disco gear to the party.
As always, please feel free to reach out to me with any questions, comments, or concerns.
In partnership,
Kate Ellison
Glen Grove Principal

The Food Services department is experiencing unprecedented staff shortages. To continue to provide meals to students in this environment, we may need to adjust to a limited menu, removing the hot entree option. This change may happen on any given day, at one or multiple schools. We will provide information to families at a particular school if this does happen, though communication may occur on short notice.
We appreciate your understanding!
FOOD & NUTRITION SERVICE IN D34: SUPPORTING STUDENT HEALTH & WELLNESS
The District 34 Food & Nutrition Services team is dedicated to making sure every D34 student has a positive and nutritious lunch experience. We follow the the guidelines of of the federal government’s National School Lunch Program, which allows us to provide meals to all children, including providing assistance to low-income families through the free/reduced breakfast/lunch program.
We want to hear your ideas and experiences as families of our customers, District 34 students! Click the link below to complete a survey from Food Services.
Your input will help us make the best choices in food options and in programming to make a positive impact on the health and wellness of your children.
FROM THE NURSE'S OFFICE
All student absences should be called into the health office no later than 7:45 a.m. at (847) 657-2394. The school has voicemail so parents can call the health office to leave messages at any time.
If your children come to school after 7:45 a.m., please have them come through the front office. This is for the safety of all of our students.
Mandatory Health Forms for 2023-2024 Incoming 6th Graders
All incoming 6th grade students MUST have a physical examination (within the last 12 months), including required vaccinations, turned in prior to August 24, 2023. Your child will NOT be able to start middle school until the physical form is turned in. If your child's health forms are already complete, you can turn them into the Glen Grove health office any time between now and the last day of school. They will be forwarded to your child's middle school with their health file. If you have any questions, please call Mrs. Hastings, Health Coordinator, at (847) 657-2394. Click here for the health exam form.

DRESS FOR THE WEATHER EVERY DAY!
Will it rain? Will it snow? Will the temperature be in 50's or the 20's?
Be sure to check the weather report to make sure your child has everything they need to be warm and dry!
- Boots and snowpants - OK to play in the fields
- Boots only - must stay on the woodchips (can play on equipment)
- No boots - must stay on the blacktop
If your child wears boots to school, don't forget to pack gym shoes.
Missing a coat? Scarf? Hat? Ask your child to check the Lost & Found!
LOST TECHNOLOGY ITEMS
We have a smart watch in the office which has been unclaimed since before Winter break. Additionally, we have an iPhone found a couple weeks ago that is still unclaimed. If your student is missing one of his/her devices, please have them check with the office to identify it. Thank you!
MATH PLACEMENT INFORMATION
Starting on March 1st, student math placements for rising 3rd through 8th graders in the 2023-2024 school year can be found in the parent portal of PowerSchool. Once you are logged into your child’s account, click on Math Placement. If you have any questions, please email the District Math Coach, Jennifer Bergeron, at jbergeron@glenview34.org . You can also visit the District 34 website to learn more about the math program and our math identification process.
SCIENCE CORNER
Our 3rd grade scientists have all started up their next unit of science, exploring ecosystems and animal adaptations. Ask your student about the ogre faced spider, blubber, and just how important human thumbs are! We will continue to collect information about different animal adaptations as we get ready to be creative with science in art class. Stay tuned to hear more about that fun interdisciplinary connection coming up soon!
As some 5th grade classrooms will soon be wrapping up their own learning about energy and matter in ecosystems, others have moved on to the next unit focused in Earth Science. Students have begun to look at the 4 major spheres that make up our planet (geosphere, atmosphere, biosphere, and hydrosphere), and will continue to explore how they interact and support one another through hands on modeling opportunities and some independent research. Coming up soon for our 5th graders is the Illinois Science Assessment, taking place the week of March 13th. This continuation of science from one unit into the next will be great preparation for that statewide grade level assessment.
LRC BOOK NOOK
One School, One Book Family Event
Thank you to all the families that came to the event. It was a fun filled evening with a variety of activities. We want to thank the following people and groups: Ms. Hausman for the beautiful leaf wreath craft, the animal displays from The River Trails Nature Center, the tree stations from the three botanist students from Northwestern University and finally, The Glenview Public Library and the Niles Public Library for providing families the opportunity to sign up for library cards. It truly was a wonderful experience. A special thank you once again to the GEF for providing this opportunity to the Glen Grove families.
The Glen Grove Library is once again giving away “a new to you” book to every student before spring break. We are looking for book donations that are gently used. Books we don’t use will either be saved for future give-aways or put in our Little Free Library (at the front of the school). Every student will go home with a book before we head out for spring break.
March Author Visit
Author Rob Harrell will be visiting third and fourth graders courtesy of The Book Stall. Mr. Harrell has written the realistic fiction book, Wink, which is one of the Battle of the Book titles. He has also written and illustrated the Batpig series. His books are available for purchase online. Please consider supporting the local independent bookstore.
