From the Principal
Thank you to all families who attended P/T conferences last week, it was great to see everyone. Our participation rate was 88% (This is a correction from the 84% I stated in the video above, I left out a classroom initially). Our goal is always 100%. We will continue to work on this goal and find ways to make this accessible for all families. If you have any feedback on how we can increase our participation rates we would welcome them. I have linked a feedback form below.
We had a great turnout at the book fair! A huge shout out to our PTO for organizing this event and for providing yummy treats for our staff during conferences.
We are looking forward to our Fall Festival this Friday and I would like to recognize our K-1 team for all of their hard work recreating the pumpkin patch fun here at Sunflower on such short notice. The joy factor is high down in the K-1 pumpkin patch right now!
As always it is an honor to serve as the Principal of Sunflower Elementary.

Fall Party Reminders
With spooky season upon us Sunflower is going to partner with PTO to put on a Fall Festival on October 29th. PTO will be coordinating 2-3 parent volunteers per classroom to help facilitate the outdoor games and activities. Be on the lookout for information coming from your room parent soon. Other than the parent volunteers, no other visitors will be able to attend.
Students may come to school in costumes, we will not have students put on costumes at school. If they want to wear a costume the will need to come to school in it and wear it all day. In considering your costumes we ask the following:
- Cultures are not costumes-Please read and share the information with your child in the handout below around showing empathy and avoiding cultural appropriations at Fall Festival.
- Costumes associated with violence will not be allowed, specifically no weapon props
- No blood and gore
- Students must be able to see where they are walking, please consider this when choosing a costume
- If a student dresses in a costume that violates any of the criteria listed above they may be asked to remove the costume
If you do not want your child to participate in any of the Fall Festival activities just email me at melissa.blevins@usd497.org and we will have alternate activities for them.
Morning Drop Off Help
The Southwest Middle School parking lot is specifically reserved for our bus drop off and for our families who have students that require extra assistance with arrival. We would ask that all other families please use the circle drive for drop off.
We appreciate your attention to this matter.
