UHS Students Celebrate Global Cultures During Culture Week
Throughout the week of October 17, Urbandale High School students enjoyed tasting global foods, dressing in cultural garb, learning about the multiple cultures living in the Urbandale community, and coming together for the first annual Culture Fair. The UHS CORE x Culture Week brought learning to life by providing opportunities for students to learn more about various cultures and celebrate diversity and inclusion at UHS and throughout the entire Urbandale community. Share Your Feedback: Community Recreation Complex
The City of Urbandale is working on design ideas for a proposed Community Recreation Complex which would be constructed in the Walnut Creek Regional Park (Meredith Drive and 152nd Street). The City needs your help in selecting the amenities you would most like to see in this new Recreation Complex. Please consider sharing your feedback in this
brief survey.
All Smiles! UHS Students Help Valerius Students Learn the Art of Fishing
Thank you to our UHS students for supporting and encouraging our younger J-Hawks at Valerius Elementary during a recent outing with the Fishing Club at Lake Hallice. UHS students, club sponsors, and Valerius parents shared their joy of fishing with Valerius students. What a great day for fishing with friends!
Learn More We Thank All Who Have Served: Veterans Day November 11, 2022
Veterans Day, observed annually on the 11th day of November, is a time for honoring all men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. We are grateful for the service and sacrifice of all those who have served and their families.
School is in session on November 11. Please review our
school calendars for upcoming holidays.
Board Approved 2023–24 and 2024–25 Academic Calendars and Adjustments
During the October 24 School Board meeting, the Board of Directors approved the academic calendars for the 2023–2024 and 2024–2025 academic years for Traditional, Extended (year-round) and Metro West Learning Academy. We would like to acknowledge all stakeholders who provided feedback which helped to inform priorities, and stakeholders who served on the calendar committee and the School Improvement Advisory Committee made up of parents, staff, and students for their feedback and suggestions throughout the process.
In addition to the calendars being approved, several adjustments were made to the elementary start and end times as well as student contact days (i.e. the number of days students are in school). These items include:
Adjustments were made to the elementary start and end times to make them consistent across all elementary schools and balance the student contact time between elementary and secondary.
Beginning in the fall of 2023, all elementary start and end times will be 8:50 a.m.–3:40 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 9:55 a.m.–3:40 p.m. on Late Start Mondays.
The number of student contact days for PreK-12 will be reduced from 179 to 177. This decision was supported by the majority of respondents on the stakeholder and staff survey and will increase the likelihood of ending the school year by Memorial Day most years.
Moving to 177 student contact days also better aligns with our neighboring school districts who have a similar number of student contact days.

City of Urbandale Uplift Project
Members of our UCSD team enjoyed participating in the City of Urbandale and Urbandale Chamber UpLift Project on October 20 to help beautify the UMS courtyard! The Urbandale UpLift Project was a one-afternoon event for volunteer teams from Urbandale businesses who donated a few hours of time and completed rewarding projects in the community for the benefit of area nonprofits, parks, and service providers. It was a great afternoon to be outside and put our gardening skills to work! #UCSDpride
Design and Construction Progress Update October 2022
Free, Confidential Counseling For All Members Of Your Household
All UCSD students and their household family members (parents, guardians and siblings) have access to the
Student Assistance Program (SAP) provided by Employee and Family Resources. The Student Assistance Program is here to help you and your family members manage the concerns in your life through free, confidential counseling. The SAP is available to you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and is strictly confidential. Call (515) 244-6090 or 800-327-4692 if you’re outside of the Des Moines area.
Cancellations & Delays
When UCSD needs to delay, dismiss early, or cancel school due to inclement weather or emergency situations, UCSD will notify families directly via email, phone, and text*, post an alert on the district website, district Facebook, district Twitter, and communicate with media outlets (WHO 13, KCCI 8, WOI 5). Please make note of the following two-hour delay, early dismissal and cancellation information. Be sure to keep your contact information updated with your school in order to stay aware, updated, and informed. *SMS (text): Parents/guardians can opt-in at any time to receive text messages by texting “Y” or “YES” to 67587. The “67587” number is the “short code” that connects to our notification provider, School Messenger.
Student Meal Pricing and Payments
The federal waiver for free school meals was not extended to the 2022-23 school year; thus, families will need to carry a positive balance in their children’s school meal accounts in order for children to access breakfast and lunch while at school. Funds can be loaded onto student accounts electronically through TITAN or by bringing cash/check to your student’s building (please place in an envelope and include your student’s first and last name so the money is credited to the correct account). Online payments are preferred because they happen instantaneously. You can also add payments through the Titan app available on the App Store (for iPhone) or Google Play Store (for Android). Ticketing Moves Online in 2022-2023
Purchasing tickets for all Athletic and Performing Arts Events in grades 7–12 must be done online. Those wishing to attend events are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance at
www.j-hawks.com/tickets. If you purchase tickets at the event, we will only be accepting credit card payments as there will no longer be a cash option at the gate. The only venue where cash payment will still be accepted this year will be for Urbandale Middle School football games. This is due to the lack of infrastructure at that venue. All other Athletic and Performing Arts Events will only be accepting online payments in advance or credit card payments at the gate. When attending events away from our home venues, we anticipate most opponents in the CIML will also be only offering online ticketing. To aid in the process of purchasing tickets in advance for away events, you may wish to visit
www.cimltickets.com.
