The Hungate Echo

Sherburn Hungate Weekly News - Summer Term 1 - Issue 6

A word from Mr Broom.

What a final week of this half term. It's been one of excitement and engagement right across school.

Starting in Early Years, we had a visit from a dental practitioner as part of their topic on 'People Who Help Us'. Our fantastic cricketers in Year 5 came 4th in the all schools kwik cricket tournament yesterday. Finally, our Year 6 children has a special treat when they visited the Apple store in Leeds for a Genius Bar session on robotics with the Apple Education Experts. They also visited Giraffe for lunch and mocktails!

So next week is the half term holidays and after today, the weather looks great. Make sure you get out and enjoy the break with your family. Thank you for your continued support this half term.

Finally, this will be the last Hungate Echo as Sherburn Hungate Community Primary School. After the break, we will have joined the STAR Multi-Academy Trust and be known as Sherburn Hungate Primary School.

Best wishes,

Mr Broom

People Who Help Us - EYFS - It's the Dentist this week!

Nursery Applications for September 2018

Just a quick note to let you know we will be allocating places for our Nursery session for September 2018 very shortly. If you would like a place, please contact the school office.

5 Star Achievers join Mr Broom for a special lunch

As a special treat for our children who have achieved five gold stars, Mr Broom & Mr Wooffindin took them to Pizza Hut for lunch on Friday. They had a super time after what is a super achievement.

We have many other children approaching 5 gold stars; so much so that i've run out of stars! Not to worry, more are ordered for the first week back.

Car Park Notice

We've noticed that some parents are using the school car park for dropping off and picking up children. Please help us to keep our children safe by making sure you don't use the car park for this purpose. If you see anyone doing so, please let me know. Thank you.

School Meal Price Increase - September 2018

After many years of no price increases, we are having to take the decision to increase school meal prices from September. For the past five years, we have enjoyed school meal prices that are way below the schools around us. With the cost of providing food increasing dramatically, we have no alternative but to increase the price. Further details will be released nearer the time as I don't have the exact figures at the moment.

Keeping Us Informed of Details

Our administration team work tirelessly to ensure our contact details are up-to-date for all our children. If you have a change of circumstances, please let us know of the changes such as change of mobile number etc.

It's also helpful to teaching staff to let them know if you have a change of family circumstances, so we can continue to support the children in school.

PE Kit

As you've probably noticed, there's a whole lot of physical education going on at Sherburn Hungate! We've activities every dinner time and a club almost every afternoon. In addition, our Year 3 children are having additional physical education lessons this term. This means that you may have seen them arrive in their PE Kits. Mr Wooffindin takes the Year 3 children immediately after registration so it seems to make sense to come to school in PE kit. For clarification, it is only the year three children who need to come to school in their PE kit, although we do ask that all classes have their PE kits and trainers in school each day. Thank you for your support.

Year 5 Cricket Team Success

Congratulations to our children who took part in the inter-school cricket tournament on Thursday, at Church Fenton Cricket Club. We came fourth overall and the children gave 100% throughout the games.

Gala a Huge Success for Sherburn Hungate

Last Saturday was the annual Sherburn Gala and, as always, we took part in the procession with the help of our ever-expanding Friends Association. What made the day even more special was that we came first place in the walking procession. The gala shield sits proudly in our hall now and we are all incredibly proud of the children and families who took part.

School Uniform & Snack Reminder

We seem to have a small number of children who are coming to school in brightly coloured trainers. These are not part of the school uniform policy. Children should wear plain black shoes.

We like to encourage our children to have a healthy break time snack and we provide this through school. However, it seems that some children are bringing snacks into school containing sweets/chocolate. These are not permitted.

Year 6 at the Apple Genius Bar

Here are a few clips from the Year 6 day at Apple Inc. Leeds. The children had a wonderful time and came back buzzing about the programming and robotics they had experienced. They were also a real credit to us with many compliments from the general public on their behaviour and attitudes.
Big picture

It's important that children attend school regularly and at Sherburn Hungate we recognise that excellent attendance leads to excellent achievement. Fact!

Congratulations to our Year 4 children who are our attendance champions in school this week with 97.2%!

Our average attendance this week is 93.2%.

We have a small number of children whose attendance is well below the national expectations. These children are known as persistently absent when their attendance falls below 90%. I will be making telephone calls to parents of these children.

Thank you for your continued support with our attendance drive. It is really appreciated.
