Resurrection Principal's Newsletter

From Principal Rick Piwowarski - September 10, 2017

Hello Resurrection Parents and Guardians!

I am very excited to start this incredible journey with you! Last year was memorialized by our yearbook, which was recently released. Great job yearbook staff! In my second year as your principal, I continue to be inspired and motivated by the amazing work that our young women do. I greatly value our partnership. The importance of our cooperation and partnership, as stressed In many Church documents on education, cannot be overstated. A key component to this partnership is communication.

I am going to use this vehicle as a means to more directly communicate with you, our families! This bi-weekly newsletter will not replace the Sunday updates that you receive and will not always give updates on specific dates and times of events. Please see our calendar for that information. Rather, I will use this space to highlight some ideas that I value, the work and action that our great students and faculty do, and provide you a more clear sense of the daily happenings at Resurrection.

As always, please feel free to contact me, or any member of our leadership team, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns. I remain yours,

in Charity and Truth,

Mr. P

Inspirational Video

This week's educational video of the week features Angela Lee Duckworth. Leaving a high flying job in consulting, Angela Lee Duckworth took a job teaching math to seventh graders in a New York public school. She quickly realized that IQ wasn't the only thing separating the successful students from those who struggled. Here, she explains her theory of "grit" as a predictor of success.

Students walking and serving the community in Charity and Truth!

Curriculum Updates

We are also very excited about the addition of our new Mobile Makers course this year. Mobile Makers is approved as an Apple Professional Learning Provider and this past summer, Ms. Kando and Mr. Green both were both selected to be part of an engaging, two month training program where teachers learned how to build apps and create a dev-shop like work environment in their classroom.

The curriculum is focused around learning by building. Students have expressed excitement about learning how to build applications and we will be showcasing their terrific work throughout the semester.

Technology Integration!

Resurrection is continuing to lead in technology integration and innovation for student learning. This past summer, Resurrection’s Innovation Lab added two new 3D printers to replace older, smaller printers. These 3D printers will be paired with a soon to arrive laser cutting machine. These tools allow endless possibilities for student creation and creative problem solving. In addition, the Innovation Lab now houses two high powered virtual reality stations to supplement the mobile VR units available for classroom use. These virtual opportunities allow students to immerse themselves in high quality educational experiences. From an Apollo 11 moon landing to the ability to conduct expensive science labs in VR, these tools expose students to another great learning opportunity.

The maker mindset that is developed in the Innovation Lab can be seen throughout the curriculum and course opportunities offered at Resurrection. This year, students in the new Mobile Makers course are learning computer science by developing iPhone apps in a collaborative dev-shop style work environment. This popular course, paired with opportunities such as Robotics and Technovation allow the young women at Resurrection to develop 21st century skills that also open doors to amazing career opportunities where women are frequently under-represented.

Resurrection will continue to create programs, courses and opportunities that allow students to move from consumers of information to creative producers of knowledge!
