PKVES Weekly News
March 15, 2020
A Message from our Principal:
Dear PKVES Parents,
As you are aware, there is an increasing concern worldwide and locally regarding the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19).
RCPS is in regular communication with the VDH about the current status and is carefully making decisions based on that information. Currently RCPS are closed for two weeks. We ask parents to check for emails from our school’s superintendent for updates on school closings. RCPS will send text messages, post on local radio and TV stations and send emails to communicate schedule changes. You can also visit the county school webpage at www.rockingham.k12.va.us .
Regarding OUR students, PKVES teachers created distance learning activities for the students of PKVES. These activities will be posted on the PKVES website on Thursday, March 19, 2020. These activities are NOT required. Additionally, the Music, Art and PE teachers have a prepared some fun activities for your children to enjoy at this time. Please click this link:

General Announcements:
Message from Mr. Wilson:
Dear PKVES Families,
Since we are dealing with a school closure, I wanted to give you a couple of resources to use when talking about it with your children:
Talking to Kids About the Coronavirus includes a YouTube link
https://childmind.org/article/talking-to-kids-about-the-coronavirus/
BrainPOP Coronavirus video for Elementary Age kids
https://www.brainpop.com/health/diseasesinjuriesandconditions/coronavirus/
I think the most important points for parents to remember that have been shared with me are:
Be developmentally appropriate when talking with your children. Don’t volunteer too much information, as this may be overwhelming. Instead, try to answer your child’s questions in a way that they can understand. Do your best to answer honestly and clearly. It’s okay if you can’t answer everything; being available to your child is what matters.
Be reassuring. Children are very egocentric, so hearing about the coronavirus on the news may be enough to make them seriously worry that they’ll catch it. It’s a great idea for adults to watch the news, digest what is said and then share any important information with children. It’s helpful to reassure your child about how rare the coronavirus actually is (the flu is much more common) and that kids actually seem to have milder symptoms.
Stick to routine. No one likes uncertainty. Staying rooted in routines and predictability is going to be especially helpful right now. This is particularly important when school is closed. Make sure you are taking care of the basics just like you would during any other break. Structured days with some of the activities the teachers at PKVES have shared with you, regular mealtimes and bedtimes are an essential part of keeping kids happy and healthy.
Please feel free to contact me via email at rwilson@rockingham.k12.va.us if you have any questions or concerns.
