2016-2017 Formal Training Towards Certification as an ACS


As of July 1, 2016, there are changes in the requirements to become an Approved Clinical Supervisor through NBCC/CCE. For more information go to In regard to the training material the 30 continuing education clock hours specific to clinical supervision has been increased to 49 continuing education clock hours.

What is the Clinical Supervision Series?

Do you know that:

  • Many states now require formal training in or certification in clinical supervision for the supervisors of professionals pursuing licensure?
  • The skills of clinical supervision are different than the skills of counseling or psychotherapy and an excellent counselor does not always become an excellent clinical supervisor?
  • Clinical supervision has a growing and impressive body of literature that encompasses various models and conceptualizations and research that has informed best and most effective practices in this area?
  • That clinical supervisors are ethically the gatekeepers of the field and as such have a responsibility to make sure that they are trained adequately and that they keep up with clinical supervision continuing education ?

The Clinical Supervision Series was developed for those clinicians who find themselves thrust into clinical supervisory roles but who have very little or no formal training. The trainings in the series follow the requirements toward the NBCC/CEE Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS) credential.

  • Clinical Supervision of Post-Degree Human Services Professionals: The Functions and Special Skills of the Quality Clinical Supervisor

    Learning Objectives: By the end of the workshop participants will:

    1. identify the specialized skills needed to promote the optimal professional development of clinical practitioners in the human services fields of Social Work, Marriage and Family Counseling and Professional Counseling.

    2. Distinguish the various functions of the clinical supervisor in the context of the professional development of practitioners in a variety of human services settings.

    3. Discuss and integrate a working knowledge of the codes of ethics related to clinical supervision as well as the various certifications that promote quality assurance and ethical processes in the area of clinical supervision.

    Clinical Supervision of Post-Degree Human Services Professionals: Useful Models & Conceptualizations

    When: Friday 02/10/2017; 9:00 am- 5:00 pm

    Learning Objectives: By the end of the workshop participants will:

    1. Identify at least five key models of clinical supervision as well as the basic tenets, advantages and disadvantages and the research base for each model.

    2. Have a working knowledge of the professional developmental process that human services professionals exhibit and will be able to identify at least three key supervisor interventions and skills that match the level or phase of supervisee development.

    3. Identify four key aspects and characteristics of a healthy working supervisory alliance that promotes optimal development of a post-degree human services professional

    Clinical Supervision of Post-Degree Human Services Professionals: The Supervisory Relationship, Dealing with Resistance, Anxiety and Other Issues

    When: Friday 03/24/2017; 9:00 am- 5:00 PM

    Learning Objectives: By the end of the workshop participants will:

    1. Increase in working knowledge & understanding of the supervisee factors that impact the health of the supervisory alliance such as resistance, anxious or avoidant attachment, anxiety, supervisee transference, and others.

    2. Understand at least three supervisor factors that contribute to stress on the supervisory alliance or relationship such as supervisor attachment style, interpersonal power dynamics and supervisor counter-transference.

    3. Identify at least three interventions that can be enacted during clinical supervision to assist supervisees in moving through supervisee factors and in growing in professional development.

    Formative and Summative Feedback in Clinical Supervision with Post Degree Helpers

    When: Friday 4/21/2017; 9:00 am- 5:00 PM

    Learning Objectives: By the end of the workshop participants will:

    1. Be able to identify at least three differences between summative versus formative feedback in clinical supervision.

    2. Be able to distinguish between the roles and functions of administrative supervision versus clinical supervision.

    3. Be able to assist a supervisee in identifying and prioritizing professional development and clinical skill building objectives.

    4. Be able to identify at least four appropriate tools and strategies to evaluate the competency of a supervisee.

    Ethical Issues in Clinical Supervision

    When: Friday 05/12/2017; 9:00 am-5:00 pm

    Learning Objectives: By the end of the workshop participants will:

    1. Have a greater understanding of the parts of the ethical codes that are relevant to the practice of clinical supervision.

    2. Increase in awareness of three possible ethical dilemmas that may occur during the course of clinical supervision.

    3. Have used an ethical dilemma resolution process in a dilemma related to clinical supervision.

    Note: This full day training is approved for continuing education hours by NBCC only, however PA Licensure Board accepts NBCC credits for all licensees under their jurisdiction.

    Cultural Issues in Clinical Supervision

    When: Friday 6/16/2017; 9:00 am-5:00 pm

    Learning Objectives: By the end of the workshop participants will:

    1. Identify at least two ways in which the supervisor-supervisee dyad is impacted

    when both parties originate from two different cultural backgrounds.

    2. Will practice at least two times role playing bringing the topic of cultural

    background up in the supervisory alliance relationship.

    3. Have used a method of reviewing for greater knowledge about the background of

    a supervisee that is different than their own.

    Methods, Techniques and Group Work in Clinical Supervision

    When: Friday 7/21/2017; 9:00 am -5:00 pm

    Learning Objectives: By the end of the workshop participants will:

    1. Identify at least three methods of strengthening the supervisory alliance so that the supervisee can become more open and willing to take risks within the alliance.

    2. Practice at least three techniques that strengthen the skills of the supervisee in his or her work with various client populations.

    3. Take part in a group supervision role play in order to experience at least three techniques that are used in group supervision to promote supervisee trust and risk taking in the group setting.

    Who are the Presenters? Lois Ehrmann PhD, LPC, NCC, ACS

    Lois is the founder & executive director of CHOICES, and has over 29 years of professional counseling experience and over 18 years of clinical supervision experience. She holds the following credentials: Registered ATTACh Clinician, Certified Attachment Focused Family Therapist & Approved Consultant, Certified IFS (CSL)Therapist, Certified EMDR Clinician & Approved Consultant (EMDRIA), Certified Clinician in Clinical Hypnosis (ACSH), Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS), National Certified Counselor (NCC) & Certified Distance Counselor (DCC). She is a trained Neurofeedback Therapist as well. She is also an affiliated assistant professor at Penn State in the Department of Counselor Education & Supervision and has been teaching there since 2004. In the most recent years of teaching she has focused on skill development in Masters level counselors and clinical supervision skills for doctoral level professional helpers.

    Karen Hansel, MSW, LCSW, ACS

    Karen is the Clinical Director at CHOICES and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. She has 20 years of experience in the mental health field and has worked with children, adults, and families in multiple levels of care. She obtained her Masters in Social Work at the University of Pittsburgh. She is a trauma focused therapist who works collaboratively with her clients to promote strengths and healing. She is trained in Structural Family Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Interpersonal Psychotherapy , EMDR Trauma Focused CBT, and Internal Family Systems. Karen is well known in the Central PA area as a steadfast and consistent psychotherapist who is compassionate with her clients and passionate about their birthright for healing and wholeness. Her clarity and perceptual intuitiveness have also made her a colleague who other professionals seek for clinical supervision and consultation. Karen recently became an Approved Clinical Supervisor through NBCC-CCE. CHOICES is blessed to have Karen on the team.

    Continuing Education

    The full day trainings are co-sponsored by Wise Heart Leadership Initiative and The Individual and Family CHOICES Program. Wise Heart Leadership Initiative is an NBCC Approved Continuing Education Provider ACEP (#6587) and may offer NBCC-approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements. The ACEP solely is responsible for all aspects of this program.

    Wide Heart Leadership Initiative (ACE#1261) is approved as a provider for social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) through the Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Wise Heart Leadership Initiative maintains responsibility for the program. ASWB Approval Period: (9/6/2016-9/6/2018). Social workers should contact their regulatory board to determine course approved for continuing education credits. The full day ethics training is granted approval for continuing education clock hours through NBCC only for 7.0 hours.

    Full day trainings in this series are approved for 7.0 Continuing Education Clock hours through NBCC and ASWB. When the whole series in completed by a participant the total number of continuing education clock hours is 49 which meets the new criteria for the certification of Approved Clinical Supervisor through NBCC-CCE.
