Dear 100% Remote Families:
Before schools closed last spring (what feels like a million years ago), I went on a listening tour through our community, visiting with families from Everitt, our feeder elementary schools and Wheat Ridge High School. In these conversations, I asked questions like:
- What have you loved about the school your child attends?
- What do you hope for in your child's middle school experience?
- If you could rule the world, what things would you change about our school system or Everitt more specifically?
Although each school had its own personality and culture and set of values, four themes resonated across Wheat Ridge community:
- We love that Everitt, and Wheat Ridge more broadly, is a truly diverse community, and we want a school system that values and celebrates our differences as sources of strength and cultural wealth.
- We want our students to feel both emotionally and physically safe in a school where each of them is seen, taken care of, and belongs.
- We want our students to engage in learning that authentically and meaningfully connects to the real world and develops skills like solving complex problems, navigating disagreement across ideological difference, innovating, and demonstrating flexibility and grit.
- We want a middle school that's focused on learning and prepares students for high school and the world beyond.
Our community did not express interest in becoming a type or brand of school. There is overwhelming support and longing for an excellent system of comprehensive neighborhood schools that serve and grow all kinds of learners. There is something to be said for attending school with your neighbors, for staying in school with the same families and in the same community from kindergarten through graduation. There is value in making an investment of time and advocacy in our homes and neighborhoods, and connecting to one another seems more important than ever, in a time that feels both isolated and polarized.
I brought those ideas forward to our remarkable Everitt Staff-- people who are committed to upholding the values of our community and serving our diverse learners in ways that both meet their needs and challenge them to grow as students and people. They worked through a process that started with each staff member brainstorming and drafting on their own and culminated in a single statement that encompasses the most important ideals and phrases from each of our individual beliefs about what school is for.
We are proud of our Everitt Mission Statement, and we are proud to have written it together in the midst of the wildest school year any of us has ever seen: With foundations of equity and excellence, Everitt empowers and inspires our students as individuals, lifelong learners, and creative critical thinkers to engage in authentic learning and contribute meaningfully to their communities and their world.
As always, thank you for believing in the power of neighborhood schools to bring our communities together, and thank you for sharing your kids with us; it is our honor to serve them.
