TOBY'S TECH TIPS
iDictionary
Did you know the iPad has a built-in dictionary? Press and hold your finger on any word on a webpage, then let go to select it. A pop-up menu next to the word will allow you to select the option to define the word. The default language of your iPad is the one a word will be defined in, but tapping Manage in the bottom left-hand corner of the definition will let you add foreign language dictionaries too! Try the Spanish-English dictionary for a quick translator.
Speak Selection/Page
For students that need this accommodation, the ability to have the iPad read the screen aloud is a great option. It works on webpages, PDFs, iBooks and more. To activate it, go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Speech and turning on Speak Selection and/or Speak Screen. Once activated, press and hold on a word to make a selection, then tap speak to hear the words read aloud. To speak the whole screen, swipe down from the top of your screen with two fingers, or tell Siri to speak the screen. The on-screen controls let you pause, skip and adjust the pace. Headphones or ear buds are great to have on hand for just this purpose.
Tobytech's Three-Free App Recommendations
Nearpod
Nearpod lets you build interactive assessments directly in slides for the classroom. Students see what you want them to see, when you want them to see it. You can share their assessments in real time during an in-class lesson, or assign as homework for students to complete as a reporting package.”
Socrative
Initiate formative assessments through quizzes, short-answer questions, and polls using Socrative. Use the teacher version to set up the assessment, then have your students access it in the student app. Socrative Teacher will instantly grade, aggregate, and provide visuals of results to help you identify trends across the class and opportunities for personalized instruction. ”
Skitch
Skitch is a markup tool that helps students annotate and explain content, allowing them to visually communicate their ideas by adding shapes and text to an image. Students can easily document their environment and connect learning to the real world.”
TobyTech's iCHALLENGE
- Decide on a topic or Apple app to teach others. This should be an app that you have seen from one of our PD's.

- Create your video.
- Complete the why, what and how (as modeled on this SMORE) or you can integrate the words into the video.
- Send to Toby before April 6.
- Call or email if you have any questions.
EXEMPLAR OF iCHALLENGE: Student explaining his Keynote (from Vanguard CJ Snyder)
How? Through video in order to share with others
What? Keynote slides, how to create a portfolio, what a slide looks like
Same student explaining how he used Keynote to document our quarterly business project. Lots of moving parts!
NEXT STEPS FOR VANGUARDS: WHAT GOOD LOOKS LIKE
- Share and send a video and explanation of evidence of SAMR's redefinition in your school. Be prepared to explain the why, how and what during our next videoconference.
- Meet with your instructional team at least once a month at a designated time and place to summarize and share this SMORE and professional development and how you differentiate this information to your teachers. The instructional team consists of you, your Principal, Lead Literacy Teacher, Lead Tech Teacher and Assistant Principal.
- Use Toby as your "go to" Education Manager for Technology. If I don't know the answer, I will direct you appropriately. Use FaceTime as much as you can. My cell is 215-680-0123. I am also here to coach you and help you plan your professional development sessions.
OUR LAST SESSION FOR THIS SCHOOL YEAR WILLBE ON 4/6/17
