A Message from the Principal
We turned the calendar to October this past week and welcomed the beginning of fall and the start of the second month of school. Thank you Frank Wagner families for working so hard to help your child be successful in distance learning. You are UNSTOPPABLE!
“Struggle is good.” -John Hattie
A colleague recently shared he had listened to John Hattie, a well known education researcher, talk about “productive struggle” and how we learn through struggle. As parents, it can be hard to watch our children struggle with their learning, but we need to allow them to do that. It’s the struggle, and overcoming the challenges, that allows for new learning and growth to occur. Share with your children how you worked to learn something new. Our kids need to understand it is normal for something to be challenging before it becomes easy. We need to allow them to experience the challenge and the exhilarating feeling that comes with overcoming the challenge and mastering something new. Please talk with your children about how pushing past the struggle is where great learning lives. We can help them see errors as opportunities to learn.
Kindergarten comes back in-person Oct. 12th
Even as we start to fall into distance learning routines, we are thinking and planning for what is next. The district announced this week that Kindergarteners will be returning to our buildings on October 12th! We look forward to seeing our youngest learners in 3-D, and begin thinking ahead towards welcoming other grades as well. As Dr. Blasko shared in his email on Monday, “In alignment with guidance from the Snohomish County Health District, we will wait at least three weeks after our developmental preschool and kindergarten students return before bringing any additional grade levels back for in-person learning. If, at that time, COVID-19 activity in the schools and community remains stable or continues to improve, then we will proceed with bringing additional elementary grades back.” Here at Frank Wagner we are preparing our safety measures and excited to have our students back for in-person learning!

It is so helpful to hear this as we all work hard with our online learning. Here is a link to the story.

Transportation for Kindergarten
We are so excited to welcome your kindergarten students into our schools on October 12! We will be offering busing for those kindergarten students who are attending their home school and live outside the 1.0 mile walkable area. Students who plan to ride a school bus to or from school MUST opt-in by filling out our Transportation Request Form to assist us in planning bus routes and maintaining physical distancing on buses as much as possible. Bus stops will be created only for those families who let us know that their child will be riding the bus.
For the safety of our students, bus drivers are not authorized to drop off kindergarten children without a parent/guardian or designee; who has been pre-authorized by the parent in writing to receive them at their bus stop. Older siblings and other identified adults can be authorized as a designee. Due to road conditions of routes, drop-off times can vary slightly from day to day, so please be at your student's bus stop five (5) minutes prior to the scheduled drop off time. Students who are not met at their bus stop will be returned to their school.
As soon as our kindergarten bus routes have been determined, we will notify families. If you have questions about riding the bus, please visit our transportation website call our Transportation Department at (360) 804-2651.
Safety Precautions
The following safety precautions will be in place on our school buses in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19:
Parents must complete a daily health screening form (attestation) for their student and present it to the driver. If the form has not been completed, the driver will have the parent complete it prior to the student boarding the bus. More information on this process will be shared soon.
Routes will be adjusted when possible to reduce bus capacities to allow for physical distancing and to reduce the length of ride for all passengers
Stops will be established to limit the number of students at any one stop when possible to allow for physical distancing
Passengers should sit in separate seats whenever possible and next to the window
During loading, students should be seated at the back of the bus first and fill in toward the front to limit face- to-face contact while passing in the aisle
Passengers should wear cloth face coverings at all times. Some special needs students may not tolerate or be medically able to comply with the requirement. In such cases when possible a face shield should be used.
Extra masks will be kept on board and available for passengers who do not have a mask upon boarding.
Proper ventilation will be maintained while passengers are on board by opening as many windows, hatches and vents as possible/practical.
All previously established Bus Rules of Conduct remain in effect for student behavior and safety.
Be On The Lookout For Your Child's Small Group Times
Attendance
Student attendance is taken daily through each child's Canvas classroom page. Please look for the green attendance button and click it to log in. We'd love students to mark themselves present for learning prior to joining their Morning Zoom Meeting each day.
Technical Difficulties?
School Meals & Food Pantry
Student lunches will be available for pickup at all elementary locations from 11:30-1:30pm daily. These meals are free for all children under age 18. We also have food available through our Frank Wagner Food Pantry for families in need. Please stop by during the lunch hours.
Free & Reduced Lunch Forms
We encourage you to complete a free/reduced food application if you have not already submitted one for the 20-21 school year. Your 19-20 application expires on 10/20/2020. Even though you currently can get free meals, that waiver is expiring at the end of December.
Do we have a current email address and phone numbers for you? Do you have Family Access yet?
It’s a great internet tool for parents to stay connected to their child and the school. As a parent, you can access their food account to know how much money is on their account and if they bought lunch that day. You can also verify attendance, check for updated contact information, and view testing data on your child. You can apply for Family Access at http://www.monroe.wednet.edu, then look on the top bar for “Families” and the drop down menu will show the Family Access link.
