We have been establishing what it means to be a role model, what that looks like in our classroom, school and community. Many of the children have described how their family members are their role model and how they have been shown what doing the right thing looks like. We also discussed a good versus a bad role model. We talked about what the differences are whilst the students discovered that even at their age they can be agents of change. We have had fun making a dream catcher which is from the traditional beliefs of Native Indian Americans. The students have also thought about if they were a superhero what their super power would be and how that would improve our world.

In Math we have looked at bar graphs and how we can use these to interpret information that we collect. We have spent lots of time on our addition and subtraction which are essential basic operations that are useful in everyday life. We have worked on the use of words in math and how we explain our numbers using words. Mental math has become part of the routine to try to encourage fluency with number thinking.

English language

During our English language classes we have enjoyed working out the difference between a sentence and a phrase. We have reflected on the correct way to write a sentence ensuring we use capitalization and punctuation correctly. With regard to reading comprehension skills, the students have been using graphic organizers to establish what a story is and the key features that make up such a narrative. We have English spelling tests each Friday morning. The spelling lists used have words from our Unit of Inquiry, high frequency words and words which follow a pattern.
