Basic First Aid for Children
Always call 911 first if perceived to be serious
Burns
Cool burn with cold running water (except 3rd degree)
Cover loosely with sterile dressing (except 3rd degree)
Call 911 and and care for shock
FOR THIRD DEGREE BURNS CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY AND DO NOT TOUCH THE BURN. IT IS THIRD DEGREE IF THE PERSON DOES NOT FEEL ANY PAIN (nerves burned away)
Choking
Give 5 abdominal thrusts upwards in the area of the diaphragm
Continue until object comes out or professional help arrives
If child becomes unconscious, call 911
CPR
Give 30 chest compressions about 1.5 inches deep at 100 per minute
Give 2 rescue breaths (blow for 1 second)
DO NOT STOP: Repeat until help comes or victim regains consciousness
External Bleeding
Apply pressure until bleeding stops
Cover dressing with a bandage
Apply more pressure and call 911
Seizure
Remove nearby objects
DO NOT hold or restrain child or put anything in the mouth
After seizure passes, monitor breathing
