Orana Catholic Primary School
Term1 Week 7
TO GIVE IS TO RECEIVE
Our community values an attitude of enthusiastically applying energy and effort to become better learners. Excellence is evident when:
• we do our best to develop our talents and share them with others
• we have high expectations of what we can achieve
• we take risks and experiment with the way we learn
• we work hard to do our best work
• we celebrate our achievements
Prayer for Peace and Justice
Dear Parents and Carers,
This week is Harmony Week. The focus is to encourage everyone to experience, explore and appreciate WA's wealth of cultural and ethnic diversity. It is an opportune time to celebrate and reflect on the many benefits our community gains from its cultural diversity, while working to remove barriers that still exist in the wider community. Students have been participating in some special activities in class. On Monday 21st March, students are invited to wear something orange with their sports uniform, as this is the colour that has been chosen to represent Harmony Day. Traditionally, orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect.
At Orana Catholic Primary School, we are fortunate to have many cultures in our community. One of our school improvement goals for 2022 is to “Explore the cultural backgrounds of families and devise ways to embrace the diversity and difference within our community”. This also reflects our school value of ‘Respect’. We have sent out a survey to identify and acknowledge our cultural heritage so that we can be aware of and appreciate our community. If you are yet filled in this survey and wish to share your cultural heritage with us, please click https://forms.office.com/r/HaKLkwp87M the link.
On Tuesday, our Year 6 students competed in the interschool cricket carnival, on what was a perfect day for cricket. There was lots of smiles and a keen sense of team spirit. Thank-you to Miss Tayla Dennett and the Year 6 staff for facilitating the student participation in this event.
On Wednesday evening, I attended the Saints John and Paul Parish Council Meeting. We are blessed with a thriving parish community. The Parish Council Members are doing an excellent job to ensure the safety and enhance the wellbeing of the parishioners, in these challenging times; a time when people need prayer, hope and connection. Many thanks to Father Thai and Father CJ for their leadership.
Yesterday we had our Year 4 to 6 Swimming Carnival. It was fantastic to be able to hold this event and to see the children enjoying physical activity. Their behaviour was commendable and our School Value of Excellence was clearly demonstrated throughout the day. Congratulations to Ward and the medal winners. Thank-you also to the parents that attended to cheer and support the students. The atmosphere was terrific. Many thanks to Miss Tayla Dennett for her thorough organisation and for ensuring both the venue’s and our covid safe protocols were followed. Many thanks to the staff that assisted with a variety of roles to ensure a smooth carnival for our students.
Enrolment interviews for 2023 Kindergarten places will be held later this term. The format will be slightly altered to adhere to Covid safe protocols. If you have a child who was born between July 1, 2018 and June 30, 2019, please contact Deb Goodwin, our enrolment officer or use the website link below, as soon as possible to secure a place. https://www.orana.wa.edu.au/admissions/

Covid-19 Update - Week 7
There was one positive case of Covid-19 reported to the school this week (Saturday 12th to Friday 18th March). The positive case and associated close contacts are in isolation, as per WA Health requirements.
Thank-you for your support in adhering to the current Covid-19 restrictions. From Friday 18th March, non-identifying, whole school correspondence will now be summarised in the newsletter at the end of each week. This will be an effective method of keeping families informed, whilst avoiding multiple daily correspondence from the school. All updates are located on our website for ease of reference. There is also a section showing WA Health Advice.

SPORTS NEWS
Cricket Carnival
What a busy week for our Year 6 students who competed at both the CAPSS Cricket Carnival and Orana House Swimming Carnival. On Tuesday 15th March, our Year 6 students travelled to Murdoch University Playing Fields to compete against other schools in a round robin competition. Our Year 6’s did exceptionally well and demonstrated their excellent cricket skills and sportsmanship qualities. Although we didn’t come home with a trophy, we celebrated many wins, and our Boys Division B team winning all 4 games! Overall, our boys team finished 4th and our girl's finished 5th. We are so proud of the wonderful efforts all our students showed on the day. Thank you to our wonderful staff who coached our students on the day, your assistance is greatly appreciated and to the parents and carers who came down to support our students.

Fair Play for Children
When it comes to children’s games, playing the game matters more that winning. But some healthy competition can be good for children – when it’s handled well. You can teach your child about fair play and how to cope with the disappointment of losing.
