Google Scholar Searches
Locate research articles with this free web search service.
Google Scholar can help you locate material from scholarly journals.
This powerful search engine can help you locate scientific studies and journal articles. While it's quick and convenient, it has drawbacks:
- Many scholarly journals do not provide free access to recent publications, or only citation information is available. Links often direct searchers to fee-based services. Our online databases, on the other hand, are all full-text and free.
- Many scholarly journals are not searchable online, even as citations. They may be available only through private or academic library databases.
- Google Scholar doesn't weed out "pseudo scholar" journals. Some second-rate publishers produce journals with impressive titles that seem authoritative. Their peer-review process may be weak or nonexistent, and the authors may lack the proper academic credentials. Databases like Gale's Academic OneFile weed out those substandard publications.
Begin in Google Scholar:
Use simple keywords to narrow your search. Results are sorted by relevance:
If the article is available, you'll find the link on the right:
If the article isn't available immediately, look for other versions of it, or try searching for related articles:
Search researchers' names to find additional articles they've authored:
Save articles to your library so you can access them easily:
Set up an alert to be notified via email when similar articles are published:
If you can't locate an article you really need, select "Interlibrary Loan" on the W-FL BOCES School Library System's homepage and choose the WorldCat option:
Paste the article title in the WorldCat search box to see if any local academic libraries have access.
If a local library has access, contact Sharon Zadarlik to request an interlibrary loan.
Happy Searching!
