Mrs. Cormack's Class Newsletter

For the Week of August 26th-30th

Week in Review

WOW! What an incredible start to the year! We have had a blast these past five days and I just think the world of this class already. This week has been mostly setting up routines and expectations, and they have all been very respectful and enthusiastic about school. We began setting up our Math block and Reader's Workshop this week, and next week I am excited to really get going with Writing and Social Studies.

What We Will Be Learning Next Week

Math: This week the students will be taking the Round Rock ISD 2nd Grade Math Diagnositc Assessment. The tests covers mostly all the skills we will cover throughout the year. The test is NOT used for report card purposes; we just want to see how much of the 2nd grade skills your student already knows at the beginning of the year. The assessment WILL be read to all students, and will take up most of the week. If there is anytime left over, we will begin problem solving and continue learning about graphs by creating our own!

Reading: In reading this week, students will learn how to choose a "Just Right" book from the libraries at school. Students will also practice reading to self for longer amounts of time (building stamina!). We will ease into our first unit of study, which will be studying the elements of a fictional story, beginning with setting and character traits.

Social Studies: The focus in Social Studies this week will be on communities. We will use a variety of resources such as our textbooks and teacher-created graphic organizers to help us learn about citizenship, the responsibilities of a good citizen, and about rules and fairness in our society.

Writing: This week will be devoted to setting up our Writing Workshop. Students will be introduced to our special writing paper, writing with pen (yes, pen!), our writing toolboxes, and sketching our ideas before writing.
